Tropes associated with Laharl:
* 100% Adoration Rating: One might not think this would apply to Laharl, but according to his description in Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku, he is loved by his subjects. .
* 108: Laharl has made 108 punishments for the Prinny squad, which are put to use if the Prinnies screw up. Number 1 is the least severe punishment, and number 108 is Negative Salary.
* Abdicate the Throne: .
* Aesop Amnesia: He goes back to his Noble Demon Card-Carrying Villain self in his subsequent appearances, though they've mostly been cameos.
** Though it's debatable that he never really changed that much. At the end of the first game, he has become a wiser king and accepted The Power of Love - he never really stopped being egotistical and a brat. And it's not like he was genuinely bad beforehand.
* Affably Evil: While he's still stubborn and prideful, Laharl can arguably count as this due to his status as a Noble Demon. . Naturally, he denies it.
* Allergic to Love: In episodeChapter 5, Laharl actually loses statistics when lustful demons accost him with words of encouragement, love, and kindness.
* All Genes Are Codominant: Averted -: Laharl's mother was human, but his status as a Half-Human Hybrid is never brought up in the games , though it is in the novels, he exhibits all of the traits of demons, and like all Overlords, he's extremely powerful.
* All There in the Manual: In the games' canon, his aversion to busty women is played for many laughs and jokes at his expense. The novels, though not canon to the games, paint a much darker story;: Laharl's aversion to busty women was instilled into him by his aunt, a well-endowed demon that .
* An Odd Place to Sleep: Laharl sleeps in a coffin, despite not being a vampire. .
* Anti-Hero (Type V)/ Anti-Villain (Type I): According to him.
* Backstory:
* Badass:
** Badass Adorable: Emotionally vulnerable, cute as a button, and .
** Badass Arm-Fold: Default pose.
** Badass Long Hair: His hair is mostly short, but his hair antennas are really long and are the design choice that makes him stick out the most and complements his badassery perfectly.
** Cultured Badass: Yes, believe it or not. Laharl does indeed know how to be sophisticated and how to behave himself at formal affairs.
** .
* Bad Boss: In chapterChapter eight8, he speculates that maybe making the prinnies work 20 hours a day with no days off was a bit harsh.
* Barbie Doll Anatomy: Laharl's chest is always completely exposed, but is never drawn with nipples.
* Battle Cries: "Ora! Here I come!" "Wha! Ha! Bite the dust!" "Here I come! Haaahahahaha!" "Die".
* Beneath the Mask: Laharl tries his very best to be completely perceived as an evil demon, but his more positive qualities, like his forgiving, noble and strangely kind nature, is regularly provoked to the surface throughout the game.
* Big Sister Worship: Towards Etna. She's not his real sister, but she was practically raised by his father and the nature of their relationship is very similar to that of siblings. His worship of her is not obvious, but it's implied that he craves recognition and respect from her. She, on the other hand, seems to see him as a Annoying Younger Sibling.
* Blush Sticker: , drawn by the series artist Takehito Harada.
* Bratty Half-Pint: Canonically, his height is four feet and five inches tall - not that anyone would pick up on that if his impressively sized ego was all they were measuring.
* .
* Bunny Ears Lawyer: Laharl's got some strange ideas of what it means to be an Overlord. If money is needed, it’s time to loot some noble’s mansion. Assassin angels/Love Freaks are potential recruits. Laughing evilly on a regular basis is a requirement. Ideal Overlord tasks are making it rain pepper so the humans will sneeze their nostrils out or deprive children of their sleep by giving them addictive videogames. Heroes should not just be defeated; enslavement is the way to go. Granted, demon standards of evil lie on this level generally, anyways - Laharl's theme song proclaims not washing his hands after going to the bathroom and playing with fire as pillars of wickedness.
* But Now I Must Go: .
* Byronic Hero: A comedic version.
* Cape Wings: According to The World of Disgaea artbook, Laharl had this ability with his scarf, though it never made it into the game. It does show up in the anime, .
* Card-Carrying Villain: "...The pendant is telling me that my heart is wicked. That's good to know." .
* .
* Conveniently an Orphan: It's convenient for the plot, but not much else.
* Crazy Consumption: After tasting Hanako's delicious food he thinks she used Zombie Juice make it so good. Hanako takes this as an insult.
Line 47:
* Cute Is Evil: Cute? You bet! Evil? He likes to think so.
* Cute Little Fangs/Fangs Are Evil: In his default state and less negative emotions, his fangs seem small and adds to his cute look, but when he’s pissed off, his mouth will open wide and reveal two fangs that, more than anything else, resemble shark teeth.
* Dark and Troubled Past: You wouldn't expect it from a Disgaea game, but the novels say otherwise.
* Deadpan Snarker: He has his moments.
* Death From Above: His final attack, Meteor Impact.
* Deceased Parents Are the Best: Laharl‘s mother was a loving woman and his father a righteous man - both conveniently dead. Deconstructed in that his mother’s death had a hugely negative impact on him .
* Defrosting Ice Prince: He starts out distant, constantly irritable, and condescending, but eventually warms up to Flonne and Etna.
* Demoted to Extra: Over the years, Etna and Flonne have appeared in more spinoffs while Laharl has only had two significant appearances.
* Determinator: His superior persistence is one of the attributes he is the most proud of. He won't let anything get in his way of what he wants.
* Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: 10 years after the game in the novels, Laharl manages to deliver a completely one-sided beatdown to Baal, and for additional humiliation, let his team of prinnies loose on Baal after his defeat. It's not Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu? anymore - more like Did You Just Sue Cthulhu Ten Billion HLs and Make Him Your Slave?
* Dodge the Bullet: In Disgaea 2, Etna and Flonne gets pissed at Laharl for various reasons and attacks him with swords and guns; he dodges all of the initial blows, though just barely, and shows of some nice foot work. He does this occasionally in Disgaea Infinite as well.
* Don't You Dare Pity Me!: “Don’t give me that look of pity. I just had a bad concussion. Bad enough that I lost my memory of getting a concussion.”
* Dramatic Wind: Wind follows Laharl constantly during battle, making his scarf billow. Interestingly, it has become a tradition among Disgaea main characters to have a Dramatic Wind following them during battle.
* The Dutiful Son: Does not have any siblings, but Vyers calls him "quite the dutiful son" in the manga, which is very true; Lahal is quite devoted to his duty as per his heritage.
* Elemental Punch: His Blazing Knuckle move is fire-based and runs off his physical attack stat.
* Emotionally Tongue-Tied: "C, congra-... Aghh! I said, congratulations!".
Line 68:
* Evil Overlord: In training.
* The Evil Prince: Laharl thinks he is this; he even claims he was ready to dethrone his father before he went and croaked on his own. Of course, that only applies for a certain level of evil.
* Exposed to the Elements: Laharl is one of the least dressed characters NIS has ever created, yet he never makes any remarks about changing temperatures, despite adventuring to parched lakes of lava and frozen tundras.
* Expressive Ears: They move ever so slightly along with his mood.
* Expressive Hair: Laharl’s antennas changes shape according to his current emotion. For example, they will curl up in shape when Laharl is lightly surprised, sharpen if he is annoyed and be perfectly erect if he is angry.
* Expressive Scarf: Like his antennas, his scarf will change shape in accordance with his mood.
* Fantastic Racism: Laharl is a victim of this in the novels, .
* Fetal Position Rebirth: In the opening art of the game, Laharl can be seen sleeping in a loose fetal position floating in a void under the Red Moon, and in the Red Moon chapter, Laharl is figuratively reborn by rediscovering love.
* Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Laharl simply wears a scarf and short shorts, making it look like he is confused about what season it is. Subverted when it turns out he's still not exactly mild, but in a completely different way than he exhibits through his appearance.
* Friendless Background: When Laharl was asleep for two years, people just assumed that he was dead or simply forgot about him. No one cares beyond that, except Etna who wanted to use him for her own gain, and one of his vassals who expressed disappointment that she didn't get to use the grave she dug for him.
* Generation Xerox: Laharl's father does his best to invoke this trope, . It is also mentioned that Laharl and King Krichevskoy are rather similar. Laharl probably inherited his big ego from his father.
* Glory Seeker: He desires to be respected and looked up to, and absolutely hates to be disrespected.
* Glowing Eyes of Doom: Laharl sports bright yellow eyes when extremely annoyed and glowing red eyes when agonized or enraged,
* Good Hurts Evil: Being horribly allergic to love and optimism makes Laharl Disgaea’sDisgaeas prominent example of this, but any evil being can be hurt by Flonne’s pendant, light or dark.
* Greed: No one is touching his allowance, even if it is vassals late for their paychecks, and has been called stingy by Etna several times.
* Hair-Trigger Temper: It would be easier to create a list of things that don't annoy him.
Line 85:
** Hereditary Hairstyle: It also seems to run in the family.
* Hairstyle Inertia: Laharl may have been born with his current hairstyle if his baby picture from Takehito Harada is any indication.
* Half-Human Hybrid: His mother is human, but most people still refer to him as a demon, if only for convenience's sake. Oddly, his half-human status is never even mentioned in the games proper, though in the novels , it's an important part of his Backstory..
* Hates Being Touched: It’s never stated directly that he hates to be touched, but the few times someone has approached him closely, he has reacted negatively, especially if said person is well-endowed.
* Heavy Sleeper: In the intro to the first game, Laharl wakes up from a two-year nap, with Etna violently waking him up. .
** She had tried to wake him up by attacking him with various deadly weapons and even when it took over a year to wake him up, and it did not seem to hurt him the slightest.
** Asleep for Days: And years when Deep Sleep is necessary!
** Good Morning Prince
Line 94:
* The Hero: Sort of.
* Hidden Heart of Gold: He does genuinely care about Flonne and Etna, even if he won't admit it.
* Hot-Blooded: Comes along with his Card-Carrying Villain status;: he's quick to anger, has a massive ego, and can often get hammy in his remarks.
*
* Human Mom, Nonhuman Dad
* Humble Hero: Mostly inverted,, but he has a unusual tendency to become embarrassed when praised:

* Humongous Mecha: The Laharl Kaiser V as Disgaea 4 DLC.
* I Miss Mom: He never says it, but he obviously does.
* Impossibly Cool Clothes: His scarf. Good luck trying to replicate that one in real life.
* Improbable Age: Even thoughtthough he is mentally and physically 13 in demon years , he rules the Netherworld, but he manage quite nicely all things considered.
* Inadequate Inheritor: His father thought he was this at the time of his death, so he had asked Etna to make sure Laharl became a great Overlord. Everyone seems to think Laharl is incompetent because he is such a Royal Brat, but the good news is that Laharl is better then he initially lets on.
* Ineffectual Loner: Never willingly alone, but absolutely miserable when he is.
Line 114:
* Jerkass Facade: Partly, many of his negative qualities originate from his wish to be a “good” demon, but the others are just a part how he is.
* Just a Kid: Etna uses this trope to call him out on his emotional immaturity, while Gordon and Jennifer are in disbelief that the overlord appears to be a thirteen-year-old boy.
* Keet: Normally not seen, but when he becomes the Overlord, he immediately begins shouting excitedly "Overlord! Overlord! Overlord!" and as his first act practices his Evil Laugh for hours on end.
* Kid Anti-Hero: A physically and mentally 13 year old Noble Demon protagonist.
* Lean and Mean: Not to an extreme, but Laharl's waist is disturbingly thin; it’s even thinner then his female companions’.
* Leitmotif: An Ode to Lord Laharl, and arguably, Disgaea.
* Like Parent Like Potential Spouse: With Flonne. See Loving a Shadow below.
* Lonely Rich Kid: His parents are dead, he is implied to have a vast fortune in money, he is implied to have no close friends other than Etna and Flonne, and .
* Loving a Shadow: It is mentioned that Flonne is very similar to Laharl’s mother, and there is quite a lot of ship teasing between the two.
* The Magnificent: In English, Laharl calls himself "The great Laharl" and the like, instead of "ore-sama" like in Japanese.
* Meaningful Name: In addition to the volcano Theme Naming, Laharl’s name means flow of mud from a volcano and the guy who fathered him is named after a real volcano (as a matter of fact, Laharl’s name is the only demon part of the volcano Theme Naming that is not named after a volcano). This makes sense because of how Laharl is in comparison to his father.
* Memento MacGuffin: In the novels, Laharl’s mother used to wear a scarf that is very similar to his own. It’s never stated that he inherited the scarf from his mother, but knowing Laharl, it’s probably not a coincidence.
* Momma's Boy: He would have most likely become this had his mother still been alive. Her death had a huge impact on him;: he went beyond mourning her death by denying the very emotion that symbolizes the bond between them, love, and he falls ill every time someone just mentions the words she used to preach to him.
* Mona Lisa Smile: His default expression is a coy smirk.
* Mood Swinger: He has 13 different moods that he drasticly swings between. Justified since such drastic mood swings are perfectly normal for a teenager. Not an extreme example, because all of the moods have recognizable causes, and they are of a wide spectrum, not just extremes.
* Muscles Are Meaningless: Does it look like he can lift his own BFS?
* My Eyes Are Leaking: "What's this, a tear?...I didn't know I could shed tears."
* My Name Is Not Durwood: He is not very fond of the pet name "Harlie" Jennifer decided to give him. Not like it'll stop her from calling him that.
* Nakama: Anyone who hurts his best friends Flonne and Etna are in for a lot of pain. He might not have the guts to say he loves them, but he has no qualms about telling what bad idea it is to mess with them, because he will not let you get away with it.
* The Napoleon: The character notes in the World of Disgaea artbook even declare that he has a Napoleon complex.
* Nigh Invulnerability: His reaction to Gordon firing a raygun at maximum power in the novels? "It tickles.". Etna also claimed that 5 shots from a rocket launcher, 4 missiles at point-blank distance and 3 X-ray beam cannons did absolutely nothing to him. However, he can still be injured by high-powered and magic-imbued weapons.
** In the games, Laharl is Made of Diamond, easily shaking of physical abuse from Flonne and Etna, even heavy abuse after a few hours nap, without a single scratch and talking like he did not even feel pain. .
* Noble Demon: Despite his claims to the contrary, he isn't particularly evil, and he never does anything truly heinous, but he denies it adamantly.
* Nobody Touches the Hair: Laharl is a sensitive about his hair.
Line 139:
* No Sympathy: When Flonne tells she is dying from the loss of her pendant and asks Laharl for help, his response is he does not care and he would not mind using violence against her even in this weak state. Old? Maimed? Diseased? Does not matter! She provokes him to help her nevertheless.
* Odd Friendship: With Flonne.
* Oedipus Complex: He openly acknowledges that he hates his dad,, while he really liked his mother.
** Though being just reminded of his father makes him change his mind about killing Hoggmeiser and stealing all of his stuff, that is a lot positive influence wielded but the guy he supposedly hate. Also Krichevskoy does not appear to believe Laharl when he claims he hates him in the flashback, he seems to simply dismiss it for an act to appear demonic and that Laharl will or have to grow out of it one day.
** Thursday lampshades this when he and Gordon find his mother's picture stashed in his drawer in Disgaea Infinite.
* One-Man Army: Single-handedly made mincemeat out of 2,000,000 spaceships. While holding back.
* One Of The Girls: Is perfectly happy with being around Flonne and Etna, and shows no interest in finding some male friends to hang out with, though it generally stems from not caring much about gender differences.
