The character undergoing a course of training is given some strange little test to prove that he/she has learned well and is ready to go forth into the world, face his/her destiny, etc.. Said test is often a lot harder than it seems. For instance, snatching a pebble out of the hands of the [[Old Master]] requires incredible speed.
