Critical Dissonance: During the Eighties, the time of her biggest popularity, Stevie didn't get a lot of love from major-media rock critics, most of whom, by some odd coincidence, happened to be big fanboys of Lindsey Buckingham. Rolling Stone was particularly notable (or egregious) in this regard; it took decades for that magazine to give her a really good review of any of her albums. In the last decade or so, however, critics have started giving her work a much better reception; this may be partly due to the number of younger artists who've cited her as an influence or inspiration.

The Woobie: Stevie had a tough time personally during the 1980's. Her closest friend of all since childhood died of leukemia shortly after giving birth, then out of grief Stevie dashed into an ill-considered marriage to her friend's widower out of a sense of duty to the baby, and throughout the decade she was fighting addiction to first cocaine and then the medication (Klonopin) that she was prescribed as part of her rehab therapy. (Not to mention that she severely sprained her ankle just before her 1989 tour began and had to spend most of it wearing Reeboks onstage instead of her famous platform boots.
