Memetic mutation? Asperger vs High Functioning Autism

1
Useless Knowledge (talkcontribs)

Back to the time when most scholars distinguished Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism as two distinct "high functioning" forms of autism, Asperger syndrome was thought of as more this trope combined with The Klutz, while HFA was thought of more as a Genius Ditz condition. Nowadays, most professionals agree that there is no clear distinction and that any intelligent autistic individual may fall more into one or the other direction. It's also not just a question of measured IQ but also what are their individual strengths and how useful are these in school and academic settings etc. A hyper-verbal "Aspergerish" individual may do better in school than a "HFA-ish" individual who learns speaking in third grade or so, but being more verbal does not automatically equate being smarter altogether.

That plus the risk of exaggerated academic demands on "Asperger" individuals because of their apparently superior intelligence is a reason not to count this example as "real life". Although autism can be mild and co-occur with intellectual giftedness, at which point this trope would be fulfilled.

So could this be added under another category like "memetic mutation"?
