- Acceptable Targets: Subverted; although Hodgman has an unreasonable fear of hoboes, he makes a clear distinction between actual hoboes and those who are simply unfortunate enough to live on the streets.
- Glurge: Parodied with the Six Oaths of the Virtuous Child.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the hobo names is Illinois Obama, a joke that, at the time, only Illinoisans and people who really follow politics would be expected to get. He isn't so obscure now.
- Memetic Mutation: The 700 Hoboes Project.
- Which has since spun off into the 700 Things Progect.
