• When Sophie is exposed as a mutant, her mother doesn't blame David for it or even get angry that she was discovered, despite the fact that this would probably never had happened if David was never friends with Sophie. Instead, she tells David that he's a brave boy and thanks him for being friends with Sophie.
• At the end of the novel, we have Rosalind smiling for the first in a long time.
