Despite being an otherwise unhappy story, you have to crack up at Tom's account of Ma attacking a peddler with a live chicken she was about to slaughter because she forgot which hand she had the axe in. It's even an in-universe example, since Grampa is mentioned to have thrown out his hip laughing at it.
