The Passion of Joan of Arc/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Hey, It's That Guy!: Antonin Artaud, theatre theorist extraordinaire, as Jean Massieu, one of the Bishops/Judges.
  • Lost Forever: Very narrowly averted. Shortly after its completion it was severely censored to avoid offending both the Catholic Church and the British, and combined with a fire that destroyed the master negative, it was believed for several decades that no uncut version survived; director Theodor Dreyer died thinking his magnum opus was doomed to be incomplete. However a fully-intact copy was found in, of all places, a mental institution in Oslo, Norway in 1981, although it would take another three years for the Norwegian Film Institute to notice it wasn't just another censored copy.
