The Vanishing/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Adaptation Displacement: So... how many of you have read the original book written by Tim Krabbe (brother of actor Jeroen Krabbe). Go on, go out and find it. It is just under a hundred pages...
  • Complete Monster: Raymond. Oooh boy.
  • High Octane Nightmare Fuel
  • It Was His Sled: In Europe at least, it's well known that both Rex and Saskia end up Buried Alive.
  • Paranoia Fuel
  • What an Idiot!: The man he knows killed his girlfriend tells him to drink a spiked drink and he will not just be told but actually experience what happened to her? And he does? In what universe is that a good idea?
    • It's more or less implied that Rex knows it's a dumb idea, but after losing Saskia, he doesn't care.
      • In the original book, when Rex asks Raymond what happened to Saskia, Raymond states that he can't tell him that, but he can let Rex experience the same thing. Rex states, "Then I'll die. [...] You're insane." Raymond states that there's no evidence against him and if a police investigation is launched against him, he'll forever keep silent about what happened to Saskia. Rex is fully aware it's a stupid idea, but he has no reason left to live.
