The X-Files/Fanfic Recs

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for The X-Files fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

Page Reconfiguration in Progress: Fan Fic Recommendations is being split into pages for each individual series, so help is needed to classify each entry into the appropriate category, and to format it according to the template.

Author and Websites

Dawson Rambo

  • Recommended by RC
  • Fanfiction novels, all absolutely brilliant.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

All the Mulders by Alloway

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Synopsis: Three aliens, a Mulder, and a Cancer Man walk into a bar...
  • Comments: Post-col, a classic of the fandom.

Telethon for the Poorly Written by Ophelia

  • Recommended by Metalhero D
  • Synopsis: A short, script format humor flick, lampooning how frequently elements of the show didn't hold up to scrutiny, not only when compared against real life but sometimes against itself as well.
  • Comments: I'm not a Psychologist indeed, Mulder.

Birthday Stories by Syntax6

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Synopsis: Mulder and Scully's birthdays, Seasons 1-7
  • Comments: A really lovely collection of little stories from an author usually known for her casefiles.

The Ledger by Amal Nahurriyeh

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Synopsis: Running a small business involves a lot of paperwork.
  • Comments: A rare fic focusing on the Lone Gunmen and how they interacted with Mulder and Scully through the years. Have a tissue handy for the end.

The Rainbow Connection by Melannen

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Synopsis: Mulder sees a different spectrum.
  • Comments: Takes the throwaway line from S3's 'Wetwired' about Mulder being red-green colourblind and explores beautifully what differences that would have made to his life and his patterns of thinking.

Last One Standing by Mabtng

  • Recommended by Kim W, Jonn
  • Synopsis: Crossover with Stephen King's epic The Stand.
  • Comments: ...Okay, crossing over two very different literary voices—the one established in THE X-FILES and Stephen King's voice—is not easy. And yet they manage to pull it off in this. Mab TNG was writing this a chapter at a time, and went on pause for about a year with about three chapters left to go—and a number of readers nearly ran mad emailing the poor woman asking her "WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FINISH!" (Someone even offered to give her a lifetime supply of FISH if she'd just finish.)

And Miles to Go Before I Sleep by lady of scarlet

  • Recommended by Taffy Cat
  • Synopsis: Mulder and Scully investigate a bizarre series of deaths in rural Arizona.
  • Comments:: Case!fic strongly reminiscent of the show's own Monster of the Week episodes. The scenes alternate between the present and the case.

tell a weather's wind round the stars by rollsofrice

  • Recommended by Anything Goes
  • Synopsis: Post colonisation angst. A short original story about what happens to Mulder and Scully after alien colonisation has taken place.
  • Comments:: What else can I say besides this is one extremely well-written fic? The setting for the fic switches between magic realism and surrealism, while writing with a poetic flair in nearly every sentence.

Shipping Fics

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

This Humming Meadow by dbkate

  • Recommended by Across The Stars
  • Pairings: Mulder/Scully
  • Synopsis: Reports of an enormous bird in Pennsylvania's Black Forest send Mulder and Scully on a road trip.
  • Comments: This fic is beautifully X-Files in the classic sense. With just a touch of romance and wonder and beauty, it echoes the very best of the series' Monster of the Week episodes.

Iolokus by RivkaT and MustangSally

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Pairings: Mulder/Scully, Mulder/Other, Scully/Other
  • Synopsis: Painted across the barren and desolate reaches of Texas, the shadows of the Project put additional pressure on Scully and Mulder's already fragile relationship.
  • Comments: One of the most famous fanfiction epics in any fandom, ever. A bleak and difficult read in parts, but gratifying in its willingness to actually let Mulder and Scully suffer and work through the traumas inflicted on them by canon.

Night Giving Off Flames by JET

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Pairings: Mulder/Scully
  • Synopsis: Mulder finds Scully again, but everything is wrong.
  • Comments: A strange, eerie read; heartwrenching but worth it for the final resolution.

Parabiosis by Penumbra

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Pairings: Mulder/Scully
  • Synopsis: Science and mysticism conjoin.
  • Comments: What can I say? An unforgettable classic of the fandom, gorgeous and gentle and beautiful, written in and around S7 as Mulder and Scully's relationship finally begins to change.

Sokol by Khyber

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Pairings: Mulder/Scully
  • Synopsis: A boy, a girl, a girl, a spaceship, and how things end.
  • Comments: A sequel of sorts to his earlier fic Reach, but it also works as a standalone. Mulder and Scully fight to save the world against truly mind-bending alien forces.

Strangers and the Strange Dead by Kipler

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Pairings: Mulder/Scully
  • Synopsis: Reports of strange reappearances in a small town draw the attention of the FBI.
  • Comments: Beautiful, unique and with an absolute kicker of an ending. Saying too much would spoil it, but an amazing read.

The Unfinished Universe by Revely

  • Recommended by katyhalo
  • Pairings: Mulder/Scully
  • Synopsis: Set in S8, a newly-returned Mulder drives back across the US with Scully and their infant son.
  • Comments: A much, much more satisfying scenario than we actually got from this era of the show, balancing Mulder's uncertainties and the tension between him and Scully with their overwhelming love for one another and their tentative new start as a family.
