Actually, the best solution is to probably do what I did at Kings Wiki:

Have one class ("spoiler") for the background and border and a separate class ("spoilerhidden") for the color of the text, then have Template:Spoiler be <span class="spoiler spoilerhidden">{{{1}}}</span>. That way, the gadget could be rewritten to toggle "spoilerhidden" out / in.
