General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

A Scotsman In Egypt by Jerusalem

  • Recommended by corin, Weird Smells
  • Synopsis: A Let's Play done by Jerusalem that tells the epic story of two drunken Scottish princes who decided to crown themselves kings of Egypt and, in doing so, set the stage to change the history of the world.
  • Comments: "Epic" doesn't even begin to describe this story. A masterfully-woven tale of massive battles, international intrigue, and Scottish stubbornness that follows the Canmore clan as they claw their way both through the desert and across England, battling rival powers and invading foreign armies one by one to forge the greatest empire in history. Reads less like a Let's Play and more like an epic historical novel with screenshots.
    • Seconded by Weird Smells: It's material like this that makes me want to write a screenplay incredibly offensive to egyptians.

I Am Skantarios! Rebirth of the Roman Empire by Skantarios

  • Recommended by Argeusthe Paladin, Liquid Uranium
  • "Synopsis": An AAR that follows the journey of a Byzantine/Basileia ton Romaion prince, Skantarios, as he tries to rebuild the Byzantine empire from the cesspit of centuries of chaos and corruption.
  • "Comments": The man had picked a difficult position to start himself out in: the Byzantine Empire, surrounded by enemies, many, many, many times more powerful than it could ever deal with, and then with time turn the table and crush them, many, many, many times over, including a full-scale Jihad (which you all know is a Gamebreaker on the player's side and Demonic Spider on the AI's on higher difficulty settings). A talented writer and an absurdly skillful TW player together creates this marvelous tale that reads like a Greek epic.
    • Seconded by Liquid Uranium: One of the most detailed and well-written works I've ever read. The author devotes an incredible amount of attention to detail, providing screenshots to document the story as it progresses. The amount of skill shown by the author is equally impressive, as he manages to achieve victory despite overwhelming odds. Be warned, though - at a full 35 pages of forum posts, it's not a quick read.
    • Be prepared to cry Manly Tears many, many, many times as you read it through.

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

  • Recommended by Tepoztecal
  • Synopsis: An AAR following the severely weakened Western Roman Empire in 363AD and beyond.
  • "Comments": It's an AAR, not a fanfic - those looking for deep, intricate plotlines should read something else. However, if you like watching the WRE struggle to rebuild itself, this is for you.

Sons of the Wolf and the Bear

  • Recommended by Slamwich
  • Synopsis: A narrative, text-focused AAR following the Sweboz tribe as they try to unify the peoples of ancient Germania into a single nation.
  • Comments: This fic is still a work in progress, currently weighing in about ten or eleven updates, but this troper thinks it's already one of the best works they have at twcenter. As far as AAR's go, it's rare to see them written this way - with characters, dialogue, and scenes - but this fic seems to prove that the approach can work if done correctly. Not as many pictures as most AAR's, so those with short attention-spans beware!
