Xenoblade Chronicles 2/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Americans Hate Tingle: In the West is considered a good but nothing special JRPG, and even if the fandom is big, it often mocks the game for being too cliche. In Japan, a 2021 poll by TV Asahi with over 50,000 participants to determine Japan's favorite console game revealed Xenoblade 2 is more loved than every Persona game in its native country, a series whose every installment is basically considered a Sacred Cow in the West, small issues notwithstanding.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks: Youtube reviewer videogamedunkey professed a dislike of the game in his review, but what really generated hatred against him was, when discussing narrative in videogames in a review of Octopath Traveler, he put a short clip of this game where Bana is saying the Nopon's Character Tic "meh", saying it was the absolute bottom of videogame narrative. A Character Tic . A lot of people thought it was an overreaction, and then he proceeded to bash on the most basic JRPG elements like turn-based combat. So, while reviewing another game, he managed to attract negative attention of fans of this game.
  • Macekre: The dub and translation is of dubious, to not say horrible quality. Though it keeps the visual content in, several terms, names and settings had its names altered for seemingly no reason other than make the game's biblical undertones less obvious, and the voice acting was made clearly on a rushed manner, with the protagonist Rex getting the worse of it all. Pyra's voice actress even admitted they had one take to do every line, which explains a lot about her sudden voice cracks: is to avoid falling into a british accent and ruining a line which will not be recorded a second time. Despite being made on the same time frame the japanese dub is noticeably more professional, and it highlights the subtitles unnecessarily changing things since obviously it uses the original names.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Pyra drinking tea. That is often described to be filled with all the tears of people that complain about her Ms. Fanservice design.
    • The cutscene where Rex says he loves Nia and the rest of the party os often quoted and joked about, partly because that's how he reacts to Nia's love confession, and fans assumed he misunderstood it like a typical Idiot Hero and got pretty angry over it, and chose to vent their anger and despair in form of jokes. However, post-battle dialogue with Nia as a blade reveals he had understood it, and a New Game Plus screen implies a four-way relationship between Rex, Pyra, Mythra and Nia after the end of the game.
    • "Japanese humor". An almost diary thread on 4chan's board /v/ where a hell of an awkward (and optional) cutscene involving Mythra and optional blade Kora dancing is constantly mocked and edited, often with the purpose of denigrating japanese videogames. Of course, it has gone on for so long that some users admit to find the scene kind of funny, or affirm that "always was".
