  • Based on a Great Big Lie: The original memoirs by Anna Leonowens on which all the versons of this story are based, The English Governess at the Siamese Court (1870) and Romance of the Harem (1872), have long been considered of dubious historicity. While Leonowens did serve as a governess for the King of Siam (and was apparently viewed with fondness by his children), just about every other detail she wrote about has been disputed or refuted by historians and the royal family of Thailand.
