- Ensemble Darkhorse: Smile is incredibly popular among the Japanese fanbase. In fact, there have been quite a few Japanese fansites just dedicated to Numbers Elite in general, rather than the main kids.
- Growing the Beard: While the series is pretty lighthearted and silly throughout, the second half (actually starting in around the early 20's) is definitely more serious and exciting.
- High Octane Nightmare Fuel: Pretty much the entirety of the manga, but Number 19 and his attack on Bashin's school especially stands out as pretty terrifying.
- Ho Yay: You mean Bashin x J isn’t canon? There’s enough Bashin x Striker and J x Smile tease as well.
- Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Browse Japanese fan sites and try to find someone Smile isn't paired up with. There was at least one out there dedicated to pairing him... with himself!
- Moe
- They Copied It, So It Sucks: The biggest criticism any of the Battle Spirits anime series get is that they're Yu-gi-oh ripoffs. Although, the only thing they have in common is that they involve card games, which is already an entire genre of anime.
- Viewer Gender Confusion: J gets a little of this. So does Nanarin, where there was really no way of knowing for the longest time.
