I like the new user introduction!

Seriously, it's not bad. In fact, I like it so much, we should probably do what Wikipedia does and have new accounts redirect to that page as an "introduction" to troping. I forget exactly how they do that ATM, but it's a nice page, and I think it's a good idea. :) GethN7 (talk) 03:22, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
For making sure our copyright and content policies are as clear and specific as need be and for doing (and continuing) the hard work of assuring our imported content is as human readable as possible. GethN7 (talk) 03:03, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

I need your help.

I have lots of questions and I'm receiving unclear information. GethN7 told me to consult with you. Can we speak on IRC? You're usually always there, but aren't right now. - Gilgamesh (talk) 03:42, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Can I ask you for $1?

We're 9 days into our 30 day campaign, and we've raised $537. That's fantastic! The idea of Orain, our message, our purpose - it means something. The belief that there can be a community led, a community ran, and a community funded website that's not ad-driven or profit based works.

Our community has believed in us from the beginning, and I firmly believe that our community will stand by us and continue to support us. It's okay if we don't reach our $5,000 goal. $5,000 was a best case scenario. $1,000 enables us to stay online another year. It enables us to keep looking at alternatives and other ways to stay online and cut costs. $500 halves that time and shortens our research ability. 11% of our goal is better than 0% of our goal.

I've made a pledge from the beginning. I've vowed to never force ads on this community for the purpose of keeping Orain alive. Ads are what separate us from the other farms we compete with. I will give my personal funds before I enable ads by force. Ads are a nuisance that you should have a voice in. We've toyed with and are developing the idea of individual wikis who want ads within their community. Some people can't donate a dollar, and that's okay. That's their way of giving and I'm down for that.

To the backers who have helped so far, Thank you!

If you haven't had a chance to donate so far, please please do. Your $1 will help make a difference in the WikiFarm world. You can help us stay online, free, and ad free.

If you have a little more than a dollar and want an Orain t-shirt, we've got those. We've also got hoodies, coffee cups, and blankets. Most of these things will have to be purchased in bulk so there's likely going to be an online store for the leftover donation drive items once the campaign is over.

As always, I want to hear from you. If you have ideas to help our Indiegogo campaign please send them to me or email me.

I apologize for spamming you like this, but I love Orain, I believe in Orain, and I want to fight to keep it alive. If you no longer want to receive urgent messages like these, please send me an email and I'll ensure that you're not bothered further.

With love,
Dustin "Dusti" Muniz

D4rkB0t

I'm in the process of creating a bot for Miraheze users. d4rkst4r.miraheze.org/wiki/D4rkB0t You can read about it here. One feature that I'm going to add is MiraScript, a simple programming language to allow sysops to control D4rkB0t through a system message page.

I can setup whatever task you want so let me know if there's anything you want D4rkB0t to do here. D4rkst4r (talk) 02:35, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Please disable Liquid Threads because it's awful and I refuse to use it. D4rkst4r (talk) 02:35, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm the one who decided we'd use LiquidThreads, if only so we could mimic how forums and discussion threads are done on TV Tropes. If you wish to opt-out, that's fine by me. We planned to upgrade to Flow for most of the wiki and still leave the option to opt-out even then. As for disabling this globally, I'm afraid that's not practicable at this time even if we wanted to. As for the bot, thank you, your hard work is very appreciated. GethN7 (talk) 04:27, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
I don't expect you to discontinue Liquid Threads just because I said so, though I hope it would be a contributing factor if you decide to. It's really, really awful but I do respect Wikimedia's attempt to streamline talk pages. It's ugly too. Flow looks like a better discussion system and I'll give it a shot. Talk pages work fine but only for users who are already very familiar with wiki convention, and sticking with that is against the spirit of MediaWiki anyway. I've got better hopes for flow and I'll request it on my wikis if it's any good.
D4rkB0t's Miraheze module is hard coded to require miraheze.org subdomains and I decided to keep it that way for reasons I've listed at d4rkst4r.miraheze.org/wiki/Custom_domains. If the api will still work with the subdomain then it shouldn't be a problem. The only index.php access I'm working with is for crawling and importing other wikis that violate the wiki spirit and lock everything down. I'm going to test it by copying the Social Justice Wiki because they locked down everything and prevent account creation. D4rkst4r (talk) 20:36, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
@GethN7 I don't know if you saw this. D4rkst4r (talk) 17:38, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. I look forward to the results of your hard work. As for the SJWiki, couldn't agree more, link me to the finished results plz. ^_^ GethN7 (talk) 20:20, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
@Vorticity @GethN7 Are there any tasks that you need help with automating on this wiki? I'm going to look into giving D4rkB0t support for custom domains on this wiki. D4rkst4r (talk) 01:30, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
We have some TV Trope artifacts lying around like messed up Unicode (since PmWiki uses a flawed interpretation of ti) and we could use a rump cleanup of any other parser artifacts left over from the initial conversion from PmWiki to MediaWiki. GethN7 (talk) 02:04, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
If you have a few examples I can get to work taking them out. D4rkst4r (talk)
Good place to start. TV Tropes has a customized PmWiki parser that left some bizarre artifiacts, and since they use CamelCase, some terms that were meaningless there and red links to nothing got transferred over here and need delinked. Also, trying to remove red links to the names of tropers that don't exist here, and those need delinked as well. Finally, some links are namespace/link items, which is specific to to TVT's parser and these need batch relinked to their appropriate page under MediaWiki parser guidelines. GethN7 (talk) 19:01, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
I'll make a bot that takes a list of all those wanted pages and then goes through all the pages of the wiki and removes the link syntax. D4rkst4r (talk) 04:22, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Can you please devise a bot which Searches all articles in Category:Useful Notes/Asia, and replaces [[Category:Useful Notes/Asia]] with [[Category:Asia]]?

Labster (talkcontribs)

Most of what I'm doing by bot these days involves category organization.

Done.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Seven years later, I've undone this. First, for consistency with the rest of the wiki. Second, to free up "Category:Asia" for the new disambiguation page.

Derivative (talkcontribs)

Setting section of the wiki is missing from the major section part.

Labster (talkcontribs)

Huh. Main page design is User:GethN7's thing, so maybe try asking him?

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Got it mostly fixed, having trouble hunting down the icon used for the settings subpages though.

User:MasterKnightDH to be precise. A quick email comparison is guaranteed to provide proof.

I actually forgot I had that account. Congratulate me for being an idiot.

Labster (talkcontribs)

Hi MasterKnightDH. Things related to accounts are dealt with by our wiki farm, Miraheze. I went ahead and forwarded your request to them there: https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Stewards%27_noticeboard#Merge_accounts

While in theory I could handle the request myself as I'm Miraheze staff as well... I'm not so good at this part of the interface, and I'd rather leave it to people with more experience.

Putting out the dumpster fire on the Donald Trump page

Summary by Labster

Trump deserves some villain tropes for trying to overthrow the government

NormAtredies (talkcontribs)

Hello

I think there is a problem on a trope that needs more moderator oversight and a more even-handed approach in my opinion.

Even despite moderator oversight (Robkelk and LooneyTunes have overseen and posted ideas of their own on that thread), the page for troping Donald Trump and discussions related keeps degenerating into a one-sided hate session that breaks the rules of All The Tropes. They try to apply villain tropes to Donald Trump despite the rules for those tropes and the website saying that hero and villain tropes aren't to be used for real people (trope that have been suggested or added include Karma Houdini and Shut Up, Hannibal). For reference here are the threads in question. Warning, they are long.

I hope that this problem can be resolved (and hope I don't face backlash for reporting a moderator).

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Hello! The log for File:Incorrect answer.jpg says you uploaded it originally. The file is missing as of April 2021. Do you still have a copy?

I went looking for "Arlen Theory", but all I could find was conspiracy theories.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

As discussed elsewhere, I've deleted the file description page.

Post moderation - anti-spam measure

1
Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Hello!

You probably already notice the site message at the top of the page. As a result of the Great Miraheze Spam Flood that affected multiple wikis in December 2020, we have instituted moderation of posts. Most people's edits and image uploads will not appear immediately, the way that they would on Wikipedia... but yours will. This is a privilege (given for consistently good edits and being a Troper in good standing), not a right.

This privilege comes with a responsibility: You also have Moderation rights. Whenever somebody makes an edit that requires moderation, it will appear at Special:Moderation until somebody with Moderation rights either approves or rejects it. Please pitch in when there are posts waiting for moderation. I trust that only spam will be rejected. 😀

If you're there...

good advice not taken

DocColress (talkcontribs)

I want to thank you again on your intervention in our latest drama. It really helped put things into perspective.

Right now, I'm torn between leaving this Wiki behind or staying just to try and make a difference in ensuring all the work, heart and dedication I poured into certain tropes over five years isn't flushed down the drain. Do you have any way of helping me? Any words of encouragement that will convince me on what path I need to take? It'd be nice to know I still have friends here.

Labster (talkcontribs)

The first thing you should do is to stop making things worse. It's hard to get reconciliation when you keep talking about how other people are responsible for your behavior. We're past the point (or should be) where it matters who is right or wrong -- the decision was made and we all need to get along with each other now.

Right now, I'm guessing your wiki hobby isn't any fun. If I were you, I'd take a little time off the wiki, just to get myself in a better frame of mind. Have fun. Maybe watch some TV or read a book. Can I recommend Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality? I think that one might be helpful to you. No one's going to delete all of your work, it will all be here when you feel like hanging around with us again.

Or you can go off on your own thing, if you'd rather be lonely and correct, rather than helpful and occasionally wrong and part of a community. That choice isn't necessarily wrong, but in my experience it's really easy to lose heart on an empty wiki. We all want other people to appreciate our work.

I respect all of the work you've put into Complete Monster. I know it's been a lot of work, though I don't entirely understand why that's the case. I still think it's an objective trope and people are nuts about it. But I'm also a meteorologist, and I think climate change is objective fact and people are nuts about it too. :( If you want to continue to improve those pages, I think we have a place for you.

DocColress (talkcontribs)

That's what I intend to do. If I can clean up my own act and better my behavior here, maybe others can do the same, so if this issue is revisited in the future OR there's a similar issue popping up, we can deal will it more civilly and gracefully.

Only if the subpages remain as they are right now. If they get turned into just hubs for links to other, smaller, content-lacking subpages, then I'd consider the trope I worked so hard on contributing to to be eviscerated.

I don't have the means or knowledge of how to fork my own Wiki, so that's out of the question.

Why it's the case would be because rampant misuse of the trope was very much present when it was first forked, the pages were untidy and lacked good sorting and structuring, and there was criteria for qualifying examples that needed to be established in order to make sure people didn't add whatever villain they wanted to the trope even if that villain had mitigating qualities or was to either too insufficiently heinous or too eclipsed in heinousness to stand out relative to other villains featured in their work. And what do you mean by "a place for me?" What place?

Highlight working Wikipedia tabs?

2
QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Hey, Brent. Could you do a thing for me, please?

In the subpage menu, I'd like to make it so that, in any given instance of the subpage header templates, the Wikipedia tab changes its appearance if the wppage parameter in the template has been defined (i.e. wppage=Some_Article's_Title_Here). Perhaps the tab and/or text could change color.

It seems that I can't program this sort of thing directly into the template definition, even if it's just a change to the text. The .css file needs to be edited in order to implement such a function. But I can't make heads or tails out of the .css file, so I'm relying on you to make this change.

Surprisingly user friendly website. Tremendous details available on few gos to.

NDKilla (talkcontribs)

Did you know that User:Dai-Gaurd has the second highest edit count (on a single wiki) out of any Miraheze account? Dai-Gaurd has an impressive 39,327 edits on this wiki as of posting this.

I mean, it's a bot. But still, second highest edit count. Damn.
