Each game is usually good for about two or three.

Breath of Fire I: Alan and Cerl's deaths, being forced to fight against and kill your sister.
Breath of Fire II: the death of Rand's mother, the death of Tiga and Claris, the death of Ray, and the death of Ryu's mother.
- Also Mina's becoming a great bird, especially with the music.
Breath of Fire III: Teepo's death, especially his dying words. And Rei's response to it.
Breath of Fire IV: Elina's death, period. Mami's (Fou-Lu's girl) death also counts.
- In the manga adaptation of Breath of Fire IV: Mami's death would definitely count and Elina's death is downright heartbreaking. The massacre of the inhabitants of Chek counts too.
- Another tearjerker from the manga continuity of Breath of Fire IV: Ryu sobbing and asking Nina (after his Kaiser Dragon Incident) why Humans Are the Real Monsters. And then waking up after a Beautiful Dreamer nap sobbing, stating he knows exactly why Fou-lu now thinks Humans Are the Real Monsters.
- And from Volume V of the manga, Fou-lu breaking down when confronted by Ryu over how Mami was the counterexample to Humans Are the Real Monsters. Fou-lu is definitely not the Iron Woobie here...
- Ershin's death. Sure, she gets better, but still...
