Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Non Sequitur Scene: The vision of the Big Bang and the Earth being created, followed directly by finding a frozen Earth wrapped in frozen chains hanging in the cafeteria. Even by the game's usual standards it's unexplained and weird.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: After severe Mind Screw and Nightmare Fuel, the ending felt very rewarding.
  • Demonic Spiders: Nearly literal; a spider-like type of ice-zombie monster serves as a miniboss on a couple occasions. You'll learn to loath it.
    • Also a nonliteral example in the form of every mook that carries a gun before you've got a few of your own. There's practically a Sudden Gameplay Change as you make the adjustment from mostly melee combat to using ranged weapons.
  • Game Breaker: The water cannon added in the Physx patch. Its continuous fire pins down enemies and prevents them from attacking, besides dealing a great deal of damage. The cannon uses icicles as ammo, which is extremely plentiful in the environment.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The game is primarily a horror game.
    • Many of the creatures have been morphed into horrifyingly symbolic versions of their former selves.
    • The sequence on the medical deck is creepy. Particularly when you realize that Everyone is being treated for radiation sickness.
    • The hooded man that you see periodically throughout the ship, staring with a blank face is rather disconcerting. Especially with the strong implication towards the end that this is in fact you.
    • The kitchen flashback. You're a defenseless cook and have to navigate a room overrun by undead dogs. The dogs are normally occupied with gorging on meat, but get close to them and they'll growl, get too close to them and you're dead. And the room's layout will only let you pass them by a narrow margin. It may not sound too scary on paper, but it is.
    • The Mental Echo power allows you to relive the last moments of a dead body's life. You can use it on a side of beef in the ship's kitchen freezer.
