Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Cat-O-9-Tails, the annoying spinning Sonic-looking enemies. There's no telling where they'll throw you if they catch you, and more often than not it's into an obstacle or into a death pit. And that's assuming they actually throw you, since their janky hitboxes can lead to them simply hurting you instead.
    • Red and grey Klobbers. Like with the green and yellow ones, they're fast-moving and are tricky to safely jump on. But while the weaker ones harmlessly bump you around with the yellow ones knocking your bananas away, the red ones run around in TNT barrels and will hurt you by exploding if they crash into you. As for the grey ones, they're often encountered in tight corridors and will take away your extra lives without you dying, meaning that unless you get away from one fast, you're likely to lose several lives in a matter of seconds.
    • Lockjaws. They're vicious red piranhas who will gnash their teeth before rushing in to take a bite out of you. Their tracking is annoyingly accurate, they're often encountered either in tight spaces or with multiple enemies hanging around (sometimes other Lockjaws), and unless you have Engarde with you, you're not hurting them.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Much like Diddy before her, Dixie's introduction in this game was met with open arms thanks to her cuteness and useful hover ability. Also like her boyfriend, she'd go on to be the star of the next game!
  • Even Better Sequel: The first game was a solid outing in its own right, but most fans agree that this was the peak of the original trilogy: it controls even better, the levels are more diverse, the new animal buddies and bonus games are fun, and the addition of a bonus world is the cherry on top.
  • Harsher in Hindsight/Hilarious in Hindsight: Depending on your sense of humor, the "No hopers" joke made at the expense of Earthworm Jim and Sonic on the video game hero awards screen is either hilarious or depressing given the state of both franchises years later.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Whether it's being chased by the terrifying Kackles, hearing their bellowing laughter when they catch you or the intense "Night on Bald Mountain-esque" soundtrack, Haunted Hall is a breeding ground of Nightmare Fuel for younger players.
  • That One Boss: King Zing can be this for some, thanks to his weak spot being awkward to hit while he himself is tricky to dodge when he chases you upon taking damage. Kreepy Krow is also this for his boss fight essentially being Bullet Hell-lite when you're having to avoid the giant eggs being shot at you while you chase him.
  • That One Level: Pick a bramble level. Any bramble level. The walls, ceilings, and a good 90% of the floors are deadly to the touch, they're often infested with mostly-invincible Zingers, and even having Squawks to fly around doesn't help much since anything less than precise navigation through the tight spiked corridors will lead to you face-planting against a wall of thorns. At least the music's nice, though!
    • Slime Climb. You're climbing up a pirate ship being flooded with water. And if you fall in, 9 times out of 10, the invincible Snapjaw will immediately lunge at you and either cost you a Kong or kill you outright. Good luck!
    • Haunted Hall is not only scary, but frustrating. As if being chased by Kackle wasn't bad enough, he's guaranteed to attack after enough time has passed, and you have to hold him back by breaking plus barrels and avoiding minus ones. But because you're on a roller coaster, you're constantly moving ahead at a breakneck pace meaning you have maybe a second to react to each barrel, and making the wrong call even once can screw you over.
    • Screech's Sprint is not only one of the dreaded bramble levels, but it's a bramble level with a race in it. Screech, the rival you race against is very speedy meaning that you can't hesitate to slow down even a little bit. And since you're often flying through cramped halls of thorns and swarms of Zingers, get ready for pain. Lots and lots of pain.
