This chapter starts with the door being knocked down by Hagrid entering the room and makes himself comfortable on the couch. Uncle Vernon points a rifle and demands for Hagrid to leave as he is "breaking and entering". Hagrid responds by telling Uncle Vernon to shut up and reaches over and jerks the gun from his hands, ties it into a knot, and throws it into a corner, which scares Vernon who backs off a bit. Hagrid then gives Harry a birthday cake that he made.

Harry then finds out who Hagrid is; the Keeper of the Keys at Hogwarts. However, Harry does not know what Hogwarts is. Hagrid is shocked at this and rounds on the Dursleys, who again shrink back in terror as Hagrid gives them "The Reason You Suck" Speech. Hagrid does this to the Dursleys several times as he finds out Harry knows nothing about the wizarding world or his parents. Hagrid then gives Harry his letter that tells him he has a place at Hogwarts, the date he starts, and a list of equipment he will need. Then the Dursleys try again to stop Harry from going, but they inadvertantly tell Harry that his parents were murdered rather then being killed in a car crash that they had told Harry had happened. This leads to another "The Reason You Suck" Speech from Hagrid. Who now has to tell Harry his history and about Voldemort and how Harry got his scar, plus some other information about the wizarding world.

Uncle Vernon tries for the last time to stop Harry from going. He goes too far and insults Albus Dumbledore which makes Hagrid angry. He then gives Dudley a pig's tail with his umbrella, causing the Dursleys to run out of the room. Harry and Hagrid then settle down for the night.
