Johnny the Homicidal Maniac/Fanfic Recs

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here:

Do warn when a fanfic may head into homosexual or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Song Without A Name by Lady Yate-xel

  • Recommended by Roach Patrol
  • Pairing: Eventual Nny/Edgar. Don't remember who Edgar is? Don't worry, he was a one-shot character from the second issue that has a freakishly large fanbase.
  • Synopsis: Song Without A Name is, to put it bluntly, a Highschool AU in which the characters of JTHM are largely gay and form a rock band.
  • Comments: It's by Lady Yate-xel. It's got 20 chapters and a sequel in the works, and is actually a thoughtful, meticulous, witty, character-driven epic (though you'll still feel a little embarrassed if anyone sees you reading it).

Squee's Fantastical Field Trip of DOOM by WTF Wonder

  • Recommended by Marlee Cross
  • Synopsis: Squee's class is going on a field trip to the zoo. Guess who volunteers to chaperone?
  • Commentary: The updates are impossibly irregular and the fic may very well be dead, but it deserves mention for being SO DAMN CLOSE to Jhonen Vasquez's style that he might as well have written it himself. The fic is also technically a crossover as Zim, Dib, and Gir all appear.

A Very Spoooky Halloween by The Exit Door

  • Recommended by Earthbound God
  • Synopsis: It's halloween but Squee's parents can't be bothered to watch him trick-or-treating. Johnny decides to step in to keep an eye on the kid.
  • Commentary: Actually very well written and great fun to read. Very close to Jhonen Vasquez's style.

Sam & Max vs Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Question The Majority

  • Recommended by Weird Kev 27
  • Synopsis: The name says it all, really: Everyone's favorite comic book Freelance Police are called in to take care of everyone's favorite comic book serial killer. Rated PG for good, clean cartoony bloodless violence and comic book swear symbols.
  • Commentary:A Hilarious read and manages capture both Jhonen Vasquez's and Steve Purcell's writing styles.

Shipping Fics

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

My Immortal (No, not THAT one!) by Annie-Chan

  • Recommended by Marlee Cross
  • Pairing: Nny/Devi
  • Synopsis: Nny returns from his 'vacation' and tries to bridge fences with Devi, who has found a new boyfriend and is starting to move on with her life.
  • Commentary: This is a slow burn Nny/Devi fic (as there's really no other way to go about this pairing) that also takes a look at other characters such as Squee and Tess.

Dark Fics

Pretty self explanatory for a work like this.

Little Red Letter, Never Forgive Me, and Spiderfly, a trilogy by Jynx'sbox. Extremely dark and full of squick (of course, anyone who is into Johnny the Homicidal Maniac can't mind some gore.)

  • Recommended by Maggoty Anne
  • Synopsis: Squee's descent into insanity.
  • Comments: One big, long, bloody, mindscrew. It can't be properly described without spoilers, but know that it is set while Squee is still a child, and the first thing he does is kill his parents. Brutally. Yet this is not a revenge fic. Just read it. It is well written, and updated regularly.
