Junk Rare/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: A rare thing that's extremely useless.

  • Straight: The Unobtainium Sword of Legend is a Rare Random Drop from a late-game encounter, but it's outclassed by most normal swords around the same tier.
  • Exaggerated: The Unobtainium Sword of Legend has a 0.333% chance to drop from a Metal Slime that would only spawn in the Definitely Final Dungeon, and only after the player completed That One Sidequest; and yet, it's easily the single weakest weapon in the whole game.
  • Downplayed:
    • The rare Unobtainium Sword of Legend is not a bad weapon per se, it's just very slightly outclassed by its peers.
    • Completing That One Sidequest increases the encounter rate of the enemies that drop the Unobtainium Sword of Legend, making it easier to obtain.
  • Justified: The Unobtainium is a rare mineral, but it's also very frail and unreliable. The only creatures who even bothered to make weapons out of them are the dumb Kobolds that inhabited the forest near the Demon Lord's castle.
  • Inverted: The store-bought Wooden Training Sword is unexpectedly one of the better weapons in the game.
  • Subverted: The player can later use a special item to unlock the Unobtainium Sword of Legend's true potential.
  • Double Subverted: It turns out, said special item can be used on all the other weapons in the game, leaving the Unobtainium Sword of Legend in the dust again.
  • Parodied: A Joke Weapon in the game is literally called the "Super Rare Sword".
  • Zig Zagged: The Unobtainium Sword of Legend is a Rare Random Drop, but it's also a Joke Item, until the player unlocks its true potential with a special item... Which only slightly increased its potential, and it still sucks... At least until the Definitely Final Dungeon, where the Unobtainium Sword of Legend can be upgraded into the Infinity+1 Sword if the special item was used beforehand.
  • Averted: The stronger the weapon, the rarer it is.
  • Enforced: The Unobtainium Sword of Legend was always intended as a Joke Item, and the developers don't want the spotlight of the main story's Infinity+1 Sword to be taken.
  • Lampshaded: When the player shows the Unobtainium Sword of Legend to the Blacksmith, he comments on how useless it is despite its rarity.
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The developers made sure that the rarest weapons the game are at the very least the Infinity-1 Sword.
  • Discussed: "I spent 9 hours hacking those monsters to farm for the rare drop, and when it finally arrived, it's even worse than the weapon I've been using to farm it."
  • Conversed: ???
