  • Ear Worm: The theme song (used since 1970) is highly iconic, known to generations throughout the UK - its instantly-identifiable melody is widely recognised, even in snippets, as a sort of aural shorthand to indicate football-related activity.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: At the start of the [1995/96] season, Manchester United introduced the untested quartet of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt & Gary Neville into their main squad, and lost their opening game 3-1. MOTD pundit Alan Hansen remarked "You don't win anything with kids". United went on to win the League & FA Cup that season, and you can just Google the likes of Beckham, Scholes & Neville to see what they accomplished since then.
  • Replacement Scrappy: As mentioned, the ITV version, which was so bad that ITV themselves didn't put up much of a fight when the BBC bid to get the rights back.
