Over-the-Shoulder Carry/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: One character, (usually an antagonist) carries another (typically a kidnap victim) slung over one of his or her shoulders.

  • Straight: Sergei hoists Rachel over his shoulder and carries her away while she squirms and pounds her fists against his back in defiance.
  • Exaggerated: Sergei carries both Rachel and Pvt. Kara, one on each shoulder.
  • Justified: Sergei is forcibly moving his hostage in a way that renders her mostly helpless.
  • Inverted: Rachel knocks out a guard after escaping from her cell and carries him over her shoulder while hiding him.
  • Subverted: While the difference in strength and size between Rachel and Sergei seems to suggest that he could easily carry her over one shoulder, he leads her away by the arms instead...
  • Double Subverted:..Until she attempts to escape, at which point she is carried.
  • Parodied: Instead of struggling or crying for help, Rachel looks totally bored and asks "Sergei, are we there yet? This isn't the most comfortable form of transportation…"
  • Deconstructed: Rachel hides a knife and uses her unconventional vantage point to stab her kidnapper in the back when he least expects it.
  • Reconstructed: After that incident, she's tied up to make sure that doesn't happen.
