One night, a NEET named Subaru Natsuki is summoned to a fantasy world. He befriends and becomes infatuated with a half-elf, Emilia Camp, but is killed and then revives back a few hours into the past. After dying more times, he realizes his ability and uses it to protect Emilia in whatever way he can. However, the half-elf is revealed as a candidate to become the queen of the Kingdom of Lugunica. Despite the potential of prolonged suffering, Subaru steps onto a path of perdition, but there may be hope; so with the help of the people he meets in his path (like Margrave Roswaal and his two maids, the sisters Rem and Ram), he decides to do what he can to support Emilia's bid to be the Queen.

Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World started as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2012, self-published and written by Tappei Nagatsuki. The light novel began publication on January 24, 2014, and is illustrated by Shin'ichirō Ōtsuka. An anime produced by White Fox, with the first season airing on April 4, 2016, and ending on March 24, 2021, due to the Covid 19 Pandemic.

  • Cool Sword: The Ten Swords of Power are magical swords that are sharper and more beautiful than regular swords. They fall into three categories, Bewitched Swords, Holy Swords, and Enchanted Swords. Each sword is mighty in its own right:
    • The Dragon Sword was made from the finest steel and blessed by the Sword God. It was given to the First Sword Saint and handed down to the Astrea family members, who received the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint. The sword can cut through anything and can't be destroyed. It uses a unique sheath, the Dragon Claw, and can't be drawn unless a particular condition is met.
    • The Fiend Sword or Murasame is an Enchanted Sword that requires blood and sacrifices to satisfy the blade's appetite for violence. The katana is said to kill invisible targets with just a touch.
    • The Dream Sword or Masayuma is a Fiend Sword similar to Murasame and is said to eat away at the wielder's soul while being compelled to kill.
    • The Yang Sword, or the Yang Sword Vollachia, is an Enchanted Sword that can appear out of thin air when the wielder. The blade can cut or burns whatever the user wishes.
    • The Life Sword or Life Sword Zeam is an Enchanted Sword that can feed on large amounts of Mana, thus destroying a person's soul.
    • It is unknown what the Cursed Sword, Spirit Sword, Beloved Sword, Shadow Sword, and Blight Sword do.
  • Cult: The Witch Cult worships the Witch of Envy and has committed heinous acts for around 4 centuries. They are rumored to be trying to resurrect the Witch of Envy. They are led by Sin Archbishops, each representing one of the Seven Deadly Sins and possessing the power of Authority.
  • Curse: Curses are spiritual and magical art from the country of Gusteko. They cannot be defended against and are known to be effective in killing. However, a contract between the target and the caster is necessary for them to work. They are considered taboo and fell out of favor with mainstream Magicians. Demon Beasts are known to naturally use them through their bites or drain Mana from a person.
  • The Empire: The Sacred Vollachia Empire is one of the Four Great Nations ruled by the Vollachia family. It is the largest known country and shares a sizeable northern border with the Lugnica Kingdom, with which they have had conflict over a millennium. The government is a monarchy led by an Emperor that has changed thanks to civil unrest. The addition of the non-aggression pact with Lugnica rescinding led to a leadership change. The current Emperor was deposed after a coup-de-tat leaving the country in a precarious position.
  • Functional Magic: Magic in Re:Zero uses people with Inherent Gift cast spells using Magical Incantations combined with Mana. There are six elements of magic: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Yin, and Yang. The strength of spells is determined by the words used. If a user is experienced with a spell, they can cast it without an incantation. There are two types of users: Magic Users and Spirit Users, due to how they use their Mana to cast magic. Magic Users utilize their inner Mana from their Gates. Spirit Users contract Spirits and the Mana in the atmosphere to perform magic.
  • The Kingdom: The Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica is one of the Four Great Nations. The kingdom gets its name from how Volcanica, a Divine Dragon, is worshiped as the national deity and symbol of the royal family. It was led by the Royal Lugnica Family, but they all died due to an unknown disease. The absence of a monarch led the prime minister, Miklotov McMahon, to become head of state for forty years. Due to uncertainty, the Sage Council turned to the prophetic Dragon Tablet. According to its prophecy, five priestesses are found across the Lugnica Kingdom through the use of the Dragon Insignia glowing red in their hands.
  • Magitek: Meteors are tools for people who don't have functional Gates to use magic. They do not require Mana or training, which means anyone can use them. They are created by professional craftsmen and have Magic Stones used to make them.
  • Mana: It is a supernatural energy that is everywhere and is commonly used in magic. Mana becomes charged with an element based on the person's innate affinity when used for magic. The energy is also used for physical and special abilities such as superhuman acts or racial skills.
  • Murder, Inc.: The Assassin Organization is a mysterious group of mercenaries whose leader is under the alias Mother. They operate based on requests from clients, usually assassination, but they take on other jobs.
  • Succession Crisis: The Royal Selection is an election that will determine the 42nd King of Lugnica. This event is happening due to the death of the entire Lugnica house due to an unknown disease. There are five candidates for which Emilia is included but as an underdog. There are also different rituals and ceremonies involved with the selection process, which spans three years.
  • Witch Species: The Witches of Sin were seven women who each governed one of the Seven Deadly Sins. In addition, each one of them carried a Witch Factor, a powerful supernatural ability based on the user's desires. They are known for causing massive devastation before each one of them died. Each of these people had good intentions but ultimately led down a path of massacres. Their influence still lives through the Witch Cult, causing chaos in the present world of Re:Zero while being led by the Archbishops who have inherited the Witches' powers.
  • Wutai: Kararagi is one of the four great nations that have a resemblance to early-modern feudal Japan. Its society is very individualistic while also showing proto-capitalistic traits. The combination of these attributes has led to the rise of free enterprise and businesses around the nation. The population is known for having a high Demi-Human population compared to other countries.
