Sonic the Hedgehog (film)/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about Sonic the Hedgehog (film) are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Evil Is Cool: Dr. Robotnik. Not only is he fun to watch thanks to Jim Carrey clearly having the time of his life playing him, but he's surprisingly dangerous and even a little menacing at times. While Sonic and Tom are compelling heroes in their own right, there's no denying that he steals the spotlight in any scene he's in.
  • Evil Is Sexy: This is probably the first time any incarnation of Robotnik/Eggman can be seriously considered this. Jimbotnik has a surprisingly big fangirl following due to being a well-groomed, charismatic Large Ham brimming with manic energy. Agent Stone's also got this going for him, since he's more conventionally attractive and incredibly loyal to boot.
  • Signature Line: "Uh... meow?"
  • So Okay It's Average: The consensus among film critics was this. While hardly game-changing, it's a better-than-average family film that's still pretty enjoyable in its own right.
  • Tainted by the Preview: No one had any hopes in this movie being good when the first trailer was shown. Sonic was a disgusting abomination standing deep in the Uncanny Valley with a model that not only looked awful, but emoted poorly, and what little was known about the plot made it feel like a dime-a-dozen Cliche Storm-riddled kid's flick. The trailer was downvoted into oblivion on Youtube, and a combination of fan outcry and bad press in general led to Sonic's design getting a massive overhaul that is unanimously agreed to be for the better.
  • Video Game Movies Suck: Probably the most triumphant aversion in the history of video game cinema. While not a massive winner at the box office, it still performed much better than expected and got rave reviews from fans and decent reviews from critics. This film's success didn't only ensure a sequel, but a third movie and a spinoff series on Paramount Plus! Not only is it held up as a standard for video game movies to aspire to, but also a standard for filmmakers to aspire to when it comes to taking feedback from fans.
  • Win Back the Crowd: Thanks to Sonic's game-accurate redesign and a better showing of what the film had to offer, people repulsed by the first trailer were willing to give it a chance.
