When you directly question the existence of God, outright deny that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, openly espouse pantheism, and live in 16th-century Italy while you're doing all of the above, you can't really be surprised when the Inquisition shows up. Galileo likewise could have stayed out of trouble if he'd stuck to talking about astronomy instead of also, in unrelated contemporary political commentary he as writing, started slandering the Pope.
