Forever War: Difference between revisions

m (Copyedit (minor))
Line 189:
* The Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan has dragged on for decades, with each side holding contradictory positions and neither willing to compromise.
* The conflict between the Sinhalese-dominated government Sri Lanka and the Tamil separatists seemed to be this, going on for 25 years with no apparent end in sight, until the Tamil Tigers were suddenly annihilated alongside alot of Tamil civilians in 2009.
* The Northwest Frontier was famous as that during the days of The Raj. This was the border between British India and Afghanistan. Basically what would happen is the Pushtan tribes would go into the valleys looking for plunder and slaves. The British naturally would march up into the hills to Make an Example of Them. Once in a while the Pushtans would get really riled up and try to wage a full-out war. Interestingly, this was a favorite assignment request among British as there were chances to get distinction in combat with appropriate promotions, which makes one wonder if they were Not So Different from the Pushtans.
* The Cold War was expected to last forever until it suddenly ended in 1991.
**In fact this happened whomever controlled the lowlands with few alterations in description, from before Christ, to the present Pakistani government. One sort-of break from it was in the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan where the Northwest Frontier became a giant Arms Fair where everyone who had a beef with the Russians-or just wanted a quick buck dumped in weapons to be used by the Afghans.
* The Cold War was expected to. last forever until it suddenly ended in 1991.
** The Vietnam War, part of the Cold War, lasted from 1955 to 1975 and was itself the continuation the war the French fought back when the area was called French Indochina... which was in turn a continuation of the war against the Japanese when they occupied French Indochina, which was in turn a continuation of the various conflicts in Indochina between the French and those seeking to evict them since the Annamese war... It goes on.
* The War on Terror has no clear end and could potentially go on for decades.
