...should there be a subcat for the cartoonist list (presuming the comics / comic franchises themselves go in the root of the cat)? If so, might I propose the puntastic 'Band of Designers'? The category description could list tropes common to many of them, like the typical mononymy.

Sure, why not? Categories cost us nothing and make things easier for users to find.
