- Hilarious in Hindsight / Harsher in Hindsight: Terrifying in Hindsight? Tolkien seems to have acquired the gift of prophecy whilst writing The Notion Club Papers in 1944, given that he gives 1986 as the date of a space programme disaster, a nuclear disaster, and the greatest storm ever to hit England. The last one was a few months out — in Real Life it happened in 1987.
