The Return of Godzilla (1984) is probably one of the best films in the franchise, after the first one, to perform an analysis on. The overall tone of dread and doom that permeates the film is caused by several factors, including the threat of possible nuclear annihilation that constantly hangs overhead because of how the movie works the Cold War into its plot, giving the film a very grim and realistic feeling that few other movies in the franchise have.
