The anime was largely created to drive sells of the manga they are based off of. I heard that there are some manga artists that still view anime that way, which makes at least some sense considering Attack on Titan sold horribly (at least in the US) for years... until it became an anime, at which point how well it sold was extraordinary.
As such, I am wondering if Manga can count as the "merchandise" and anime being the half hour commercial.
