Weathering with You/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

These things about Weathering with You are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Base Breaker:
    • Hodaka himself, mainly for what he did at the end. Some consider him a short-sighted, selfish, immature brat for letting Tokyo be subject to at least three years of constant rainfall, causing millions of Tokyoites be displaced, with who knows how many injured or dead, and billions of Yen worth of property damage just to rescue Hina, who he's only known for months at best. The fact that he ran away from home because he feels "suffocated" at home without telling audiences why he feels that way, in addition to him constantly running away from the police, does not help. Others consider him a heroic rebel for defying both a human society and a supernatural system that is apathetic at best to his and Hina's plights and, in the latter case, can't even be called a Deal with the Devil, since that would imply knowingly parlaying with an entity that does not have your best interests at heart - Hina wasn't even given the courtesy of knowing that there was a less-than-benevolent being behind the sunshine girl's power.
    • The old priest and the elderly woman customer who is actually Taki's grandmother are seen in a poor light by some viewers, who interpret their positions - that the apparently abnormal rainfall is nature just putting things back to how it used to be - as unnecessarily giving airtime to climate change skeptics. Others think them a necessary reminder that, even in a reality that doesn't have any clear evidence of supernatural entities acting on it, humanity doesn't know as much about the climate and how the world ought to be as it wants to think it does.
  • Designated Hero: Hodaka is viewed this way by some, mostly for what is seen as selfish willingness to drown most of Tokyo and let millions suffer just to save Hina. Interestingly, Shinkai himself acknowledges this:

If the definition of a hero is a person who would save both his significant other and the world, the protagonist of this film, Hodaka, is not a hero...
