What Lies Beneath/Nightmare Fuel

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • The initial ghosts sightings Claire sees is this for both believers of the paranormal and skeptics. On the Paranormal side of things, Claire is being haunted by a ghost of someone she hasn't met or known well. She assumes that her neighbor killed his wife, and the latter is haunting her for not saving her. However that's not the case as it's far deeper than that. To top it off her husband, who she loves unconditionally, doesn't believe her and is only getting angrier the more she brings it up. On the skeptic side of things, she survived a terrible accident that left her amnesia of the event prior, her only daughter has just went to college, which everyone knows is devastating for a mother; and despite having a somewhat stable relationship, her marriage to Norman is rocky. So anyone would think she was going crazy. It turns out she isn't but the truth is far more terrifying.
  • Norman's reveal as the killer. Before this he was a mild mannered, if not grouchy renowned scientist. However as time goes on in the movie, he becomes far more sinister. When he initially dismisses Claire's claims of a ghost, seemed reasonable in assuming so and worried about her sanity. It turns out, that it was because he believed that she regained her memory and was using the ghost thing to make him admit his deeds. When he realized she truly believed there was a ghost in the house, he used it to his advantage. He faked electrocuting himself, to get Claire to stay home with him. He lied to her constantly about the circumstances of Madison's death. Even called 411 making her think he was calling 911 to get them to find the body. To top it off, when all his scheming failed, he drugged Claire with an experimental parallelizing agent from his own lab and tried to drown her in the tub. All while talking about how "Close" he'll be with her daughter. In a meta sense, it shocked many audiences how well Harrison Ford, a man who is used to playing the hero, is just as effective as a villain.
  • While Norman was preparing to drown Claire, he notices Madison's necklace around her. When he takes the time to try to remove it, Claire's face morphs into Madison's blue decomposing form for a brief second. This not only scares the crap out of Norman but it causes him to crack his head off the bathroom sink rendering him unconscious and bleeding, while Claire tries to get out. It was extra scary because even though, Norman didn't initially believe in Claire's ghost claims, this was one of the things that prove him wrong.
