Anything by flakedice

  • The author has somehow become one of my new favorites. The AU's are all interconnected with each other and the longest one (Lord and Prince) has managed to become a huge sprawling project that is largely successful because the author knows how to create a real, believable world and even OCs that are engaging. The less numerous canon stories are also enjoyable to read. Most of the stories are yaoi, so be warned.
    • Seconded. Lord and Prince is the pinnacle of all Holicfic—beautiful world building, intriguing story lines, and lovable, lovable OC's.

Anything by Anyjen

  • Most of her stories aren't particularly long, but what she writes is well-worth reading. Most can be described as slice of life stories, and one of them, The Woollen Monstrosity, won an UFO award.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

In Any Other World, xxxHolic Side by Memory Dragon

  • Recommended by Zashiki-Warashi
  • Synopsis: Watanuki finds himself in a peculiar predicament due to one of Yuuko's errands. It becomes the least of his worries when Doumeki begins to act strangely. Once the archer disappears, what does Watanuki have to do to get him back?
  • Comments: This fic has both the seriousness and humor of the series. It's a well written and engaging side story, rather like the film (it even crosses over slightly with a Tsubasa Chronicle story written by the same author). It is well worth a read.

Unfair Weather Friends by Nate Grey

  • Recommended by Zashiki-Warashi
  • Synopsis: Himawari has a plot to get Watanuki and the Zashiki-warashi together, and be rid of her curse all at once. All it will cost is her humanity.
  • Comments: The story is not only told almost entirely from Himawari's point of view, but it pairs Watanuki and the Zashiki-Warashi together, which are almost never seen in the fandom. It's both unique and moving, and puts a spin on Himawari's curse.

Shipping Fics

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Here's to Your Empty Space by Nina

  • Recommended by Lavode
  • Pairing: Doumeki/Watanuki
  • Synopsis: (Spoilers for chapter 182 of the manga) After inheriting the shop, Watanuki takes to wearing Yuuko's clothes. Doumeki tries to keep him sane and happy, but is all too aware that Watanuki doesn't love him.
  • Commentary: Contains Yaoi and potential spoilers. Sad, beautiful and well written.

Button Pushing by Neo

  • Recommended by guineveredawn
  • Pairing: Doumeki/Watanuki
  • Synopsis: Yuuko gets Doumeki and Watanuki cellphones. Hilarity ensues.
  • Commentary: Mostly fluff, but the author really gets the characters' voices down pat, and the dialogue is sparkling and genuinely funny. If I could persuade you with just one phrase it would be "Doumeki in tights."

The Professor's Wife by foolish_m0rtal

  • Recommended by Tsubasafan
  • Pairing: Doumeki/Watanuki, others
  • Synopsis: (Spoilers for end of the manga) Watanuki pays the price of having no one else but those with wishes to see him to keep the shop and to not be bound within it. What could have been had Watanuki chose a different path.
  • Commentary: Contains Yaoi with potential spoilers and dark themes. How the series should have ended. Beautiful, sad, and fun. One of the most IC fics I've read of this series in awhile.

Crossovers

Addicted to Death by Sinnatious

  • Recommended by ladysekhmetka
  • Synopsis: Crossover with Death Note. Light meets Watanuki on a bus and realizes that Watanuki can see Ryuk. After meeting Yuuko, Light has to figure a way to keep the two quiet about his 'bad' habit.
  • Commentary: A cross over with good characterization and plot remaining true to each of the original series. Light trying to outmaneuver Yuuko is amusing.

Butterfly’s Web by Aishuu and Sophia Prester

Midnight Smile by Flakedice

  • Recommended by Saltyavocado
  • Synopsis: Doumeki doesn't care for the performing arts. Until he sees a performance that he will never forget.
  • Comment: A tight, well written series of oneshots that are all exactly 104 words long. Watanuki is an actor for traditional Japanese theater and Doumeki is a business. Fun times ensue =D
