Animation Age Ghetto: Sort of averted, sort of not. The film was highly successful both financially and critically despite being rated PG. But nowadays, bowdlerized versions of it get aired on TV channels geared toward children.
Awesome Music: John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams combined to make a superb soundtrack - their next film was Chicken Run - and six words: "High Hopes" sung by Doris Day. You'll know it when you hear it.
- Also, "The Ants Go Marching One By One" has never been this badass.
Complete Monster: General Mandible is a ruthless ant soldier that tried to drown his colony Queen and hoards of her loyal subjects in his attempts at seizing power for himself. Seems to be standard villainy at first, until you learn of the reason why he planned to eradicate his own colony. His goal is not so much "ambition" as it is "purification"; he considers the worker ants weak-willed, undisciplined and uncommitted vermin, so he plans to build a new colony filled with (what he views as) the ideal ant.
Ensemble Darkhorse: Cutter, probably because he's voiced by Christopher Walken.
- Also, his Heel Face Turn.
Memetic Mutation: "Who the hell is THAT?!"
Squick: The ants drink aphid beer out of the anuses of live aphids.
- When Weaver was drinking one, the aphid was squirming.
They Copied It, So It Sucks: John Lasseter felt double-crossed when he heard about this film being produced, considering he discussed the general idea of A Bugs Life with Jeffery Katzenberg before he left to form Dreamworks.
What Do You Mean It's for Kids?: The movie may have a few bouts of slapstick and action, but dialogue wise, this is a Woody Allen flick.
