Cassette Beasts

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
Wherever we are now!

The player wakes up on an unknown beach and searches around. They then get attacked by a crab-like creature with a traffic cone for a body. They then are rescued by a woman named Kayleigh, who hands them a tape recorder and a tape based on their aesthetics. She then tells them to listen to the tape, and they play it and transform into monsters like her. The two defeat the enemy crab as she takes them down. The player learns they are on New Wirral, a world different from Earth, and that the island they are on carries many mysteries with the possibility of finding a way home.

Cassette Beasts is a game developed by Bytten Studio. The same team produced Lenna's Inception, which was published by Raw Fury. A demo was released during the 2022 Steam Next Fest. The whole game was released on April 26, 2023.

Tropes used in Cassette Beasts include:
  • Alternate History: The other Earth that New Wirral castaways find themselves like one historian claims there was a 20th century even where there was a peace deal with elves. Another example comes from Hoylake's question, which mentions the Roman Empire and the Moon Landing but then asks about the Day of Birds. There is also a historian who says people deny the 1969 Mars landing.
  • Anti-Frustration Features:
    • When a player records a monster, they can defeat it, which allows for a higher chance of recording.
    • You can run away from any battle with trainers, captains, and Archangels, but at the cost of resources. This can help if the battle is unwinnable, allowing you to return to become more prepared.
  • Be a Mon: The human characters and a dog use tape recorder-like devices to transform into titular monsters to battle others or others who want to use their power for other goals.
  • Gay Option: All five human partners become romantic with the player despite their gender.
  • Mons: The Cassette Beasts, though they aren't captured, are copied onto the tapes for a person to gain their abilities.
  • Mon Machine: The tape recorders used by the characters can transform the listener into a monster that's been recorded on tape.
  • Monster Upgrade: A phenomenon on the island allows two transformed people to fuse if 'their hearts are one.' This combines the two into a stronger monster but requires a strong relationship.
    • Wild Cassette Beasts can fuse independently, making 'Rogue Fusions' that can change the environment and drop additional rewards.
  • Trapped in Another World: New Wirral is a land mass in the endless ocean where people from alternate Earths find themselves.
  • Wide Open Sandbox: The game allows players to travel anywhere if they have traversal abilities. To obtain those, we must explore and record the proper Cassette Beast.
