Film Festivals are events where new films are shown, usually to the peers of the people who made the films although many festivals are open to the public.

The "Big Five" festivals for live-action films, as of 2020, are the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France; the Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy, the Berlin International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany, the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada and the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, USA.

The "Big Four" festivals for animated films, as of 2020, are the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, France; the Ottawa International Animation Festival in Ottawa, Canada; the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Hiroshima, Japan; and the Animafest Zagreb in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Austin Film Festival (in Austin, Texas, USA) has the biggest Screenplay Competition in the world.
