Eureka Seven/Nightmare Fuel

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • It had a disturbing scene at the end of episode 20 where Renton suddenly snaps HARD and stomps an LFO into a mechanical pulp (the fact that it's drawn out as long as it is just makes even more disturbing), only to pull the Nirvash's foot away and discover a bloody, severed arm stuck to the foot. Hideki Anno would be impressed... Made infinitely more disturbing because up until this point, Renton, and most members of the audience, have been totally unaware that enemy LFO units were piloted by humans. The entire time Renton's been fighting, he's been killing people. Renton is 14.
  • Just when you think it can't get any worse, Renton lets out a blood-curdling scream when he hallucinates a blob carrying his face. That scream alone takes the episode's level of disturbing beyond your worst nightmares.
  • Dominic's visit to the "Joy Division". The sick and twisted experiments on teenage girls are creepy by themselves, but they also tell you just why Anemone is as she is.
    • It's worth noting that that scene earned that episode (and only that episode) a TV-MA rating in the US. Can't imagine why...
      • Nah, the scene where THEEND rips out a Coralian's insides gave it the TV-MA rating. Graphic bloody violence is more likely to get it that rating than psychological torture.
  • Anemone, from her disturbing ways of eating jam to being obsessively dependent on drugs, one can't help but be horrified watching her in the series.
  • The entire story arc involving Renton, Ray Beams and Charles Beams. Initially they get along pretty well and the Beams consider Renton a surrogate son. However when he decides to go back to Gekkostate it turns out that while their feelings for him were genuine, they used him in an effort to get to Gekkostate to capture and/or kill Eureka. Which is bad enough. However when they failed the first time, they try to do so a second time, through distraction and infiltration. Which sounds no different than the usual spy/military moments in many action shows. However, we get a first glimpse of Ray's slipping sanity. On top of trying to kill Eureka and destroying Gekkostate, Ray intends to convince Renton to come back with them. Deluded into believing that Eureka is some kind of monster that wishes to consume her "son". Charles tries to get her to focus on the mission, citing regulations which seems to calm her down. However Ray still insists that if she can't convince Renton, she'll kill him along with Eureka. When they begin their invasion, which involves shutting the power off and using nightvision goggles to their advantage. While Holland is battling it out with Charles, Talho goes to the brig to get Renton, Eureka and her kids out only for Ray to get the drop on her. Holding Talho at gunpoint. When she sees the children leave after Renton, she's shocked at wondering why a rebellious group have children on board. That is until they hear them call for "Mama". Eureka steps out and holds the children in a protective manner. Ray, out of disbelief that the girl she considers a monster could ever had children, snaps and holds Talho at knifepoint while pointing her gun at Eureka. Renton in turn, pulls a gun on Ray, shocking her. She tries to explain to Renton what Eureka is, but Renton doesn't want to hear it. Demanding she let them all go. Before anyone could talk any further, Woz gets the power back on temporarily blinding Ray which causes Talho to subdue her, nearly slitting her own throat in the process. After a brief distraction from Nirvash Type Zero acting on it's own, Holland empties his submachine gun into Charles' guts. However Ray manages to get one last shot, severely wounding Holland's leg with his rifle. Ray is brought in to see Charles' body and after requesting to kiss Charles goodbye, she sets off a timer causing him to explode into a pile of blood. Distracting Gekkostate and making her escape. As if things can't possibly get any worse, that was the moment where Ray's insanity was Up To Eleven. Upon returning to her own ship, The Swan. She starts humming a song that she, Charles, Renton and Holland all know too well. All the while her once clean ship, is now in ruins with food and laundry everywhere. With the only neat thing being a set empty table with 3 plates and cups. One for her, one for Charles and one for Renton. The story arc ends with Ray attempting a suicide mission intending to kill all of Gekkostate. Including Renton. Renton tries to talk her out of it, intentionally threatening to fight her to protect Eureka and asking questions on whether or not they'd be happy together had he stayed with them. Up until then there was nothing but silence, save for the song Ray was blasting to distract Gekkostate, while she used unmanned KLFs to distract the LFOs. However Ray does answer in her tragic twisted way. She's now convinced that Eureka had consumed Renton and is planning on killing him along with herself in order to join Charles in the afterlife. Her intention being to crash the Swan into the Gekko, killing everyone. However after a well timed evasive shot with the cannons and Holland destroying the bridge, the Gekko is out of harms way and Ray's plan fails. In one last bit of nightmare fuel, she finds herself having to reach her severed arm for her wedding ring before the ship blows up. Killing her for good. The entire arc traumatizing Renton.

Ray Beams: It's far too late, for everything!
Renton Thurston: Please Miss Ray.
Ray Beams: Renton? Eureka, the one you're there to protect, took every happy future away from your mama. Now it's my turn to take everything away, FROM YOUR FUTURE EUREKA!! Renton, you've been possessed by a horrible and dangerous monster, but it's alright!! Mama will save you and we'll all go together where Charles is waiting for us!!!
