Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, known in Europe as Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly, is a Japanese survival horror video game developed and published by Tecmo in 2003 for the PlayStation 2. It is the second installment in the Fatal Frame series, and features an independent story with little relation to the first title. The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they explore an abandoned village and experience encounters with the paranormal. Their lives quickly become threatened when the village spirits begin to possess the pair and target them as sacrifices for an ancient ritual.Players must use a camera with powers of exorcism to defeat enemies and uncover the secrets of the village.

Tropes used in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly include:
  • Body Horror:Fallen Woman.
  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: All throughout the game.
  • The Cameo: The game includes costumes based on the Dead or Alive and Deception series.
  • Captain Ersatz: In the game, one type of ghost is a woman with long, face-covering black hair that slowly emerges from a box. She's a clear Shout-Out to The Ring, and that goes double for when you see her emerge from a well to attack you, just like Sadako.
  • Creepy Child: The Kiryu twins.
  • Creepy Doll: Par for the course.
  • Creepy Twins: The game has this as one of its major themes.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: Chitose Tachibana.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: In the game's trailer, one can see Mio running as fast as she can to rescue Mayu, and damned if it wouldn't be nice if she could run that fast in-game!
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Try playing either the first or second game for a while, then switch between them. Have fun panicking as you continuously press the wrong button to raise the camera!
  • Dead All Along:Itsuki. Possibly not the most shocking reveal in video game history, but it can still leave a strong impression.
  • Diabolus Ex Machina: The ending pull some heavy handed tactics to make sure there is no joy in Mudville when the credits roll.
  • Emergency Weapon: Type-07 film. It's extremely weak, but it's the only film of which there's always an infinite supply, and it will get the job done when you've used up all of your good film.
