Immune to Fate/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: Somebody who can naturally Screw Destiny and Fight Fate.

  • Straight: For some reason, Alice has a natural knack for Screwing Destiny.
  • Exaggerated: The Almaiden is a seer said to be the living incarnation of the goddess who governs destiny, meaning that she knows the fate of all other mortals... save for a handful of outliers like Alice.
  • Justified: Alice's birth was the result of minor damage to the Loom of Fate. While it's still functioning properly, it literally doesn't know she exists and can't counterbalance her actions until after the fact.
  • Inverted: Bob is completely and utterly bound to his fate.
  • Subverted: Alice thinks she is immune to fate, but she's actually just following an older, unknown prophecy...
  • Double Subverted: ...so when she finds this out, she breaks that one as well.
    • She knew about that prophecy, liked the outcome, and decided to follow it. When the negative parts of it rear their head, she proves this by preventing them.
  • Parodied: This is is explicitly a perk of becoming a main character, and everyone in that verse is aware of it and actively angling for the lead roles.
  • Deconstructed: Alice's ability to defy fate attracts the attention of various unpleasant entities interested in using her as part of their plots to Screw Destiny by conquering the world.
  • Reconstructed: Alice only gets the ability to defy fate because it has been corrupted by evil, and her destroying the old order is needed for good to triumph.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice's ability to fight against fate may, in fact, be her destiny. It's a little unclear, and while some of those aware of her knack are convinced this is a sign she's extra special, Alice herself doesn't buy it.
  • Averted: There is no such thing as predetermination.
  • Enforced: A story about someone resigned to fate would create Values Dissonance to a modern audience, so they're adjusted to do just the opposite.
  • Lampshaded: "Hang on, my scrying abilities seem to get a bit fuzzy when Alice is involved...."
  • Invoked: By working through prophetic loopholes until she finally succeeds, Alice actually manages to make herself Immune to Fate.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Laughs: Alice is aware of her ability, and shamelessly flaunts it to get out of frivolous concerns -- like skipping school to hit the mall because she's "avoiding that boring fate of being stuck in class all day!"
  • Played For Drama: The Almaiden decides that any anomalies like Alice must be eliminated in order for fate to run its course smoothly. While she can't see or manipulate Alice's fate directly, she can view and manipulate the fates of all 'normal people' she contacts, spawning a long and deliberate Witch Hunt...
