Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance/Memes

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • One of the themes of the story is memetics, and the manipulation of society by the manipulation of cultural memes (through media, etc.). Unfortunately, much of the dialogue comes across as more than a little bit ridiculous:
    • "Really contagious memes..."
    • "We can rebel against our genes and memes."
    • "The Sears Program's one hell of a bad meme machine."
  • NANOMACHINES, son!
  • "I played college ball, you know!"
  • "Don't FUCK with this Senator!" *cue audience cheering out of nowhere after Raiden gets tossed into the air and kicked like a football*
  • Revengeance Status. A weird kind of video where some naughty scene of an anime or outright of porn animation is interrupted by Rising characters suddenly slashing or punching into the screen, apparently to "save" the viewer of something "cringe", with the character's theme song also blasting out of nowhere. The whole thing soon spread to the Devil May Cry fandom and even the Sonic the Hedgehog one, since basically to make a X status video all you need is for the character to be punching, kicking, shooting or slashing and a theme song associated with him beginning to play.
  • Monsoon's ravings about memes were memetic, most specifically "Memes, the DNA of the Soul".
  • "200% MAD" is a meme featuring Senator Armstrong and some screenshot clips to form the text.
  • Senator Armstrong yelling "Make America Great Again" was likely a reference to Ronald Reagan's use of the phrase, but became incredibly memetic when Donald Trump would use the same phrase a few years after the release of the game during the 2016 American presidential election.
  • The exchange from Maxor's parody dub of a cutscene became a meme:

Raiden: "Nice argument Senator, why don’t you back it up with a source?"
Senator Armstrong: "My source is that I made it the fuck up!"
