• And the Fandom Rejoiced:
  • Miis are playable... only in side modes, but hey: you're still able to play as Darth Vader or Bob Ross in a Mario platformer!
  • The numerous throwbacks to Super Mario World, a nice change of pace after the ones to Super Mario Bros 3 found in New Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.
  • The first player can finally play as someone other than Mario in the Deluxe edition!
• Game Breaker:
  • The Super Acorn carries on the grand tradition of flight-based powerups breaking the game. Like the cape in Super Mario World, you can use it to glide across dangerous terrain for long distances. While it's not as busted since there's no way to infinitely sustain your gliding, it takes a lot of the challenge out of some of the game's tougher platforming sections.
  • The P-Acorn, however, does get infinite hangtime. Along with making clearing annoying stages a breeze, it also can also make it a lot easier to grab certain tricky Star Coins.
  • Introduced in New Super Luigi U, Nabbit is basically the game's easy mode: while he can't use powerups, he doesn't take damage from enemies or most obstacles. In the DLC he was introduced in, he also gives you 100 extra seconds to beat a level in.
  • Toadette from Deluxe is also a lot more powerful than the Mario Bros. and generic Toads: while she isn't invincible like Nabbit, she gets exclusive access to the Super Crown, which turns her into Peachette, who can glide across bottomless pits just like Peach could in Super Mario Bros. 2. Oh, and even when she's not Peachette, Toadette also controls a lot better underwater and swims like a character wearing a Penguin Suit.
  • The Baby Yoshis have a ton of power packed away in their tiny little bodies. The magenta ones can give you a ton of hangtime thanks to being long-lasting, multiuse balloons that synergize with the Flying Squirrel Suit, while the blue ones can instantly kill most enemies by trapping them in bubbles. And while you can't take them out of the levels you get them in, even the gold ones are capable of acting like Flashbangs that momentarily stun annoying enemies.
• It's the Same, Now It Sucks: Despite it shaping up to have its own identity, this game gets called out for not bringing out "the full potential of the Wii U". The New Super Luigi U DLC attracted similar criticism from those who thought the increased difficulty via slippery Luigi physics and shorter time limit weren't enough to justify the price tag.
• Memetic Mutation: Thanks to a comic by Indonesian artist ayyk92, the fanart of other characters other than Toadette using the Super Crown to transform in their own versions of Peach or female versions of themselves (with a big dose of Hotter and Sexier involved) exploded up to the release of the Deluxe version of the game.
• Memetic Sex God: An unconventional example in that it's a Power-Up that counts for this trope instead of a character. The Super Crown has featured prominently in a metric ton of Rule 34 where characters like Bowser, King Boo, Chain Chomps, and other characters across and beyond the Mario universe are genderbent into a curvy bombshell of a woman after putting it on. "Bowsette" in particular exploded in popularity overnight to the point of becoming an iconic sex symbol on par with the princesses!
• Most Annoying Sound: The novelty of using Miis in the bonus modes wears off once you hear their voices. No, they don't reuse their Mario Kart voicelines. Instead, they make these weird garbled noises that make them sound less like people and more like malfunctioning machines!
