MOD: I have restored "Unfortunate Implications" to Super Mario RPG/YMMV

You do not get to be the arbiter of how other people react to something. Not here.

If we wanted somebody to tell other people how to think, we would have advertised for applicants years ago.

Even if you think that something is blatantly obvious, somebody else can completely miss what you see if it isn't explicitly stated.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

My apologies. I just thought someone looking at a bunch of inoffensively cute, cuddly little mole people that were obvious stand-ins for mountaineering hillbillies and assuming "OH MY GOD RACIST STEREOTYPES AGAINST BLACK PEOPLE" was a bit of a reach (or to be blunt, a really stupid conclusion that no sane person would ever jump to) and explained as much in my edit reason. I thought you could delete YMMV entries as long as you had a proper justification and that blanket removals with none whatsoever were what was frowned upon, but if I misunderstood the rules then I won't be doing that again.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

The example didn't say anything about black people, it just trailed off. For all I knew, the person who added it was pointing out how they were like hillbillies... It's far too late to ask who the troper thought was being implied, and when in doubt it's best to assume good faith.

Thanks for the apology, and for being understanding.

Yep, all three of them. I plan on adding Andromeda and Le Mu from the first and second games to the Mechanical Abomination page, too.

Killing Subnautica Leviathans

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Hey, can you link me to anything showing someone actually killing one? Last I knew it was literally impossible.

Thanks.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Hey, didn't know that you had played Subnautica! But anyway, here's a few links showing all three types of hostile Leviathans getting killed:

Reaper

Sea Dragon

Ghost

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Yeah, I actually wrote the article (and I'm currently in the midst of a self-imposed challenge to pave over the entire ocean surface in Creative mode, which is how I know about the behavior of the Leviathans at the Aurora's engines).

Thanks for the links, I'll have to check them out this evening after work.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

And I finally got a chance to watch them. Wow. Thanks.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

You're welcome!

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

I don't play it, but is it possible that they weren't intended to be killed? If so, that's at least a case of Lord British Postulate, though I don't know about their function in normal gameplay.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Their function in normal gameplay is to lunge out of the darkness, grab you or your submersible in their jaws, and crush. Up until now I thought it was only possible to drive them off at best.

Eldritch Abomination

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

I've seen you've been doing a lot of work on those subpages. In addition to the obligatory thanks, do you think you could provide some examples for this userspace article I have on standby while I wait for a slot in the Workshop to open?

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Sure! Though, shouldn't the trope have a different name since it wasn't grandfathered in during the split from TV Tropes? From what I understand that's supposed to be the case, which is why my take on Dragons are Demonic and Wicked Wasps have their own names, as is another dragon-related trope I'm currently working on (Draconic Deity as opposed to Dragons are Divine).

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Nah, it's not strictly required that I name it something different - that said, if you have suggestions for additional/alternate trope names, I'd be happy to consider them.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Alright, I was going to post these on the in-progress page, but a warning popped up during editing saying that it should only be edited by you or an admin so as to prevent damage to the wiki. So I'll post a few down here:

Anime and Manga

  • Berserk has the Beast of Darkness, a monstrous wolf that is Guts' bloodlust and hatred of Griffith given form. It's one of the swordsman's greatest enemies, and wants nothing more than to make him submit to his darkest desires so it can permanently steal control of his body and freely indulge in its psychopathic bloodlust.
  • The Tailed Beasts of Naruto fame are dangerous monsters made of primal Chakra, and look like massive and unholy versions of otherwise ordinary animals, such as the Eight-Tails looking like a skinless ox with octopus tentacles or the Nine-Tails being a demonic-looking fox. Most have been sealed inside of human hosts in hopes of keeping the unruly beasts under control, but this often results in the hosts going insane or having control of their bodies ripped away by the beasts possessing them.

Film

  • Animals exposed to the Shimmer from Annihilation are mutated into a form that, while recognizable, are far more alien and freaky than anything found on Earth. On the more mundane side of things is an alligator with a mouth full of shark teeth, while far more extreme is a bear with its skull exposed that can mimic the dying screams of a human it killed, and has one of her eyes and quite possibly her entire skull assimilated into its being.

Video Games

  • Bloodborne has many, but the Cleric Beast and Vicar Amelia are among the most iconic examples. They look like massive bipedal wolves with reindeer antlers that have been starved to death, and their screams sound truly hellish. Both seem to be some form of Wendigo, with the latter introducing herself by erupting forth from the body of a seemingly normal priestess.
  • Barbas from The Elder Scrolls is a benevolent and adorable example, being a talking Big Friendly Dog with a Brooklyn accent and the best bud of Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile... as well as an aspect and the conscience of the Prince himself, who tries to keep him from screwing over anyone unfortunate enough to bargain with him. Furthermore, The Elder Scrolls: Redguard shows that he doesn't strictly stick to the form of a dog, and can be seen randomly changing forms before resetting back to his dog form. Clavicus will even comment on it, saying that he likes being a dog on sunny days, as well as many other things.
  • Since the Heartless from Kingdom Hearts are an entire race of Eldritch Abominations, the ones with more animalistic forms invoke this trope such as the Powerwilds and Bouncywilds or Pot Spiders. But even among them, there are a few that stand out:
    • Skoll, a massive wolf Heartless named after the giant sun-chasing wolf from Norse mythology. It fights by summoning packs of ghostly wolf minions, firing off powerful ice attacks, and trying to crush Sora and friends underneath a mass of darkness big enough to fill up the sky. But what makes it really special is the fact that it's the Heartless of Prince Hans himself, who's been completely corrupted by the darkness in his heart.
    • Scar similarly becomes consumed by hatred and rage. But unlike Hans, his inner darkness is so powerful that he manages to hold onto his original form after becoming a Heartless... a feat only shared by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. And even in death, Scar's ghost lingers as a powerful presence that haunts the Pride Lands, eventually turning into a massive Heartless called the Groundshaker after merging with a ton of other ghost Scars.
Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Ah, right. Forgot about that, my apologies. You want I should copy paste it on your behalf, or should I wait until it gets in the Workshop so you can be credited properly?

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Either option works for me!

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Rightyo!

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Do you happen to frequent the MarioWiki or its Discord/forums often, by some chance?

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

I browse MarioWiki as a frame of reference or to look stuff up, but I don't edit it or participate in any of that chat stuff. How come?

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Ah, was just wondering! I got my general wiki-editing "start" there, I believe.

I also wanted some help with the Super Mario Maker article and the soon-to-be-made one for its sequel, and I figured I'd call on you since you were the main person doing a bunch of Mario-related work lately. I plan to copy over articles from MarioWiki and go from there - they're CC-BY-SA-3.0 last I checked, so it'd be totally above board, but I tend to do some rewriting regardless when copying this way.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

I'll post some edits of my own on each article, thanks for asking! It'll take a backseat to the trope I'm working on in my sandbox, but still: I'm game to work on them! I also plan on launching a Mario Odyssey article some time next week, so that should be fun.

Re: Informal tone

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Was inclined to agree that you might be overreacting, but really I can see where you're coming from. Unfortunately that's just my style of edit - I don't actively aim for formal style so much as it is just a thing that happens, e.g. the bit about certain evo lines being about to learn Roar didn't strike me as that weird, since almost every Pokemon that's not in a larval/baby/otherwise weak form can learn it. (In retrospect, that's probably more unusual than anything else - I wouldn't """object""" to you making a formal note of that, for instance.)

And as for following behind you, I do that to pretty much everyone - my routine always involves checking Recent Changes, seeing what edits were made, and following up to correct any left-behind errors if applicable - from there I may also add new examples if one comes to mind as well. (You should see the amount of tabs I have. 6_9)

But in any case, just know there's no hard feelings (minus the slight raised brow when I saw six message notifications :B) and feel free to come to me about anything any time.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Thanks, glad we came to an understanding. And I just want to say that I had no idea that editing/deleting my initial edit would register as six separate notifications. Really sorry about that!

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Haha, it's no problem.

Re: Working on Tropes

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

I noticed we don't have a trope about locusts and their reputation as plaugebringers, would you be willing to help me Workshop that?

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Not sure if I can really help there, sorry. I'm not really that familiar with how locusts are portrayed in media aside from their appearances in the Bible.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Ah, fair enough - though the Egyptian plagues are pretty popular reference material, so I could probably extrapolate from there...

I just looked over your contributions since you joined...

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Aw man, thank you so much!

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

You earned it. Enjoy!

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

I personally wanna thank you for all the stuff you've done with the Trope Workshop in particular, too!
