• Non Sequitur Scene: The Cat Song.
• Complete Monster: Akai initially only wants to uphold the frugal laws of the state, but then has a relationship with one of the Sky Beasts, who needs blood to survive, so he starts killing women behind the government's back. He starts off trying to keep Seikichi in line, but later resolves to shoot him in the back!
• Crowning Moment of Awesome:
  • Throughout episodes 16 to 20, nearly everyone gets one.
  • Onui's is saved for episode 22, rescuing Shunpei in her dog form.
  • Tetsuju gets pretty close in episode 23 (combined with one of many from Ginjiro). Oise and Tenhou have one seconds later.
  • Torii finally has one in episode 25 dueling Gin.
• Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: The final episode, when Seikichi finally gets the people of Edo to look up at the fireworks caused by the rocket's explosion.
  • Shunpei realizing Onui was the puppy he once had.
• Dying Moment of Awesome: Akai
• Ear Worm: The OP, done by Puffy AmiYumi to boot.
• Moral Event Horizon: Mizuno (and arguably Toyama) crosses it in episode 25.
• Viewer Gender Confusion: Shunpei can pretty easily be mistaken for a girl.
