  • Alternate Character Interpretation -- is Grimes a Byronic Hero who holds the small-minded world in distain? an idealist defeated by harsh realities? or simply a sadistic jerk who thinks the means justifies his self-serving ends? It is interesting how a different tenor voice can conjure different visions of this fascinating character.
  • Jerkass Woobie -- Grimes may not be directly responsible for the children's deaths, and his fate is tragic, but what he does to the second boy is still unacceptable.
  • Never Live It Down -- his one dead apprentice forever marks Grimes as a murderer, at least in some villagers' minds.
