SWAT 4/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Complete Monster: Several, in the more dramatic missions. After all, this is a game where you play as a member of SWAT and encounter all sorts of dangerous suspects.
    • The North Korean special forces soldiers / terrorists /paramilitaries whatever, who storm a hospital in mission 10, mercilessly slaughtering many innocent doctors and hospital workers in an attempt to kidnap the South Korean politician present there.
    • Lawrence Fairfax also counts, though he probably has a mild Freudian Excuse.
    • Andrew Taronne and his cult who murdered their own children and buried them in the basement with their cultist books.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In mission 6, elevator doors can keep opening and closing on a victim's head. And if you go back to that area later, it'll still be the case, because there is apparently no way to actually get him out.
    • It's an idle enviromental animation. But still... the poor devil...
  • High Octane Nightmare Fuel: The second mission with the stalker and abductor of women. But even more so in the eighth mission, where you investigate the hideout of a notorious crazy apocalyptic cult. The whole place is genuinely creepy, especially at the end, where you enter the basement of the dilapidated appartment building belonging to the cultists. It turns out they willingly killed their own children and buried them there.
    • Not to mention in St. Michael's Hospital (which was invaded by North Korean Elite Soldiers attempting to kill a South Korean diplomat). One of the rooms of the hospital's children's section (yes, they have a children's section in this game) had birthday decorations like balloons and banners on the walls. However, although the beds are abandoned, the walls are splattered with blood, and there will almost invariably be terrorists hiding in that room. And, as according to the briefing, the elite soldiers had slaughtered everyone they came across in the hospital, one can only assume the worst for those children.
  • Most Annoying Sound: "You're in my way, sir." "That's my mark you're at, sir." "You're standing in my spot, sir." "Boss, out of my way." "I need you to move, sir." "Please move out of my way, sir."
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel / Growing the Beard : Definitely the best and most mature of the four SWAT games so far. It helps that it was in Development Hell for six long years and that the talented old warhorses at Irrational eventually got the opportunity to work on it.
    • Also, the The Expansion Pack is a variation of this trope, since it heavily improved the already great original game further.
  • That One Level: Du Plessis Diamonds, for how cramped it is, you WILL get shot. Also, the Taronne residence, where lethal weapons will blow up the carelessly scattered explosive hazards and kill anyone in the blast.
    • Mt. Threshold is pretty tough as well, it's the largest level in the game, so it can be difficult to keep track of where you've been, and there's about a dozen places where you can get ambushed easily.
    • The Old Granite Hotel. Not only are there a lot of highly skilled opponents with hostages, you're also on a 10 minute time limit to defuse several bombs.
