Called "the first war in the world", it starts when the Vanir Gullveig enters Odin's hall and is attacked, but its roots seem to extend back to a dispute over which group of gods should get the benefit of mortal tribute and worship (on which the Aesir had a monopoly at the time). A failure to reach an initial truce results in all-out war, with massive armies on both sides laying waste to vast swaths of land. In the end, the Aesir and Vanir both tired of the war and negotiated a new and lasting truce which resulted in the two bands of gods becoming one. Oddly, one other result of the war was the invention of poetry.
