Splatoon

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Splatoon is a franchise of family friendly shooting games from Nintendo.

Gameplay primarily consists of shooting ink, which doubles both as an offensive weapon and as a defensive tool, allowing enhanced mobility, cover, and speed on claimed terrain, while hindering opposing forces on the same.

As of 2024 it consists of three games, plus some DLC.

Check out its webpage on the Nintendo website here.

Tropes used in Splatoon include:
  • Abnormal Ammo: Ink is used instead as ammunition.
  • After the End: Most mammalian life is eradicated by the time of the games.
  • Cassandra Truth: The reason Cap'n Cuttlefish has to Recruit Teenagers with Attitude (including the player) to help him is because none of the adult Inklings believe his claims of an impending attack by the Octarians. Well, nobody except Callie & Marie, but the player doesn't learn that until later.
  • Everything's Squishier with Cephalopods: Inklings and Octolings play a major role in the story, though other cephalopods make an appearance as well.
  • Family-Friendly Firearms: Ink is shot rather then traditional ammo.
  • Hydrophobic Squid: Despite being super-evolved forms of aquatic mollusks, Inklings will die instantly if immersed in water, though they can "swim" in ink.
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: Played with. Most characters have what appears to be hair at first glance, but is really just their tentacles, which due to their location and style resemble hair.
  • Speaking Simlish: Character speed in a strange language.
  • You Are Number Six: The player character's actual name is up to the player, but is given the designation "Agent 3" by Cap'n Cuttlefish. There are Agents 2 and 3 too, namely Callie and Marie.
