I thought copying content from TV Tropes is copyright infringement. Why does this site use direct page quotes from TV Tropes?

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Could you identify the passages which are infringing, so we can remove them? It's impossible to police every edit, although we do try to the best of our ability.

EDIT: I've just reviewed the page history, and other than one edit by a now-banned contributor (which wasn't an infringement anyway) the vast majority of edits to this page have been automated changes to formatting or links performed by bots, changes to categories, or edits by admins. The rest have been deletions. Please identify the passages you think are infringements.

Perhaps you misunderstand? The wiki is based on a legal copy of the original TV Tropes wiki as it existed in late June and early July of 2012. On or about 12 July 2012, TV Tropes changed its license from Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-BY-SA) to the incompatible Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike version (CC-BY-NC-SA). (Possibly illegally, certainly improperly, but we won't get into that right now.) That makes any content acquired before early-mid July of 2012 legal, as we distribute it under the same license we acquired it. Any new content from TVT originating after the license change, be they entire pages or individual sentences, cannot be copied here as they were were made to TVT under the incompatible license.

As I've noted, this page has been substantially unchanged since the fork, with the majority of edits being site-specific formatting, link coding, and deletions. There should be nothing in it that was illegally copied from TVT content created after July 2012. If there is, please identify it specifically so we can remove it.

I wasn't aware TV Tropes made that change and that certain edits from TV Tropes are legal. Apologies.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Again, you misunderstand. Only the content we acquired at the fork is legal. There are no subsequent "edits from TVT" which can be added that are legal -- unless the editor is the sole creator of the changes and can grant us his original license, the same one he grants to TVT when he adds content to it.

I strongly recommend you read our Copyright policy for more information. But it's really not hard to understand. Under TVT's original license, anyone could copy the entire wiki for any purpose. Once someone Fast Eddie didn't approve of did so, though, he unilaterally changed TVT's license, for among other reasons, to keep competing wikis from "leeching" further content from TVT, which it does do.

The content from the fork is what I was referring to, thank you very much.
